roof fell in last night

Post by fordman »

my roof had a spot that was leaking. but i didnt know where it was at. i found it today after last night storm. it caved in the valley right near the roof edge. i have a hugh hole in my roof about 12x12. i have been up in the attic crawl space clearing out all the shingles and wet rock wool insulation as well as plaster. then it can dry out. i have no idea how i am going to patch the hole until i can get enough money to do the roof right. i might have a piece of tin and some shingles to put over it. i hope that fixes it any way. this was also where the animal that was in my ceiling was probably living too. i found all kinds of ripped up paper in this crawl space.

Damn, why can't it be a lot closer. I could help you do a good patch on that. It would hold until you do the roof. Oh well your attic would probably kick my ass. I figure you know how to do it, so I won't insult you by giving advice.

If it's leaking in the valley the only right way to fix it is peal back both sides of the valley and redo the flashing so the water drains correctly.

well i had two pieces of sheet metal flashing. i got under what is left of the shingles. it took both pieces to patch the hole. i then layed roof tar around the tin . it will probably still leak. just not as bad. atleast i can put a pan under it now when it leaks. well no i cant. the pan would have to be 16 inch or less wide. the studs are right there. i barely got back in there to scrap out all the wet crap. i wish i would have known last year whre it was. i was up there looking for the leak. but didnt see anything.

Is it possible to tarp the whole area where the valley is? You'll need to lay some plywood over the hole so water won't pond and cave the tarp in. If so, it would at least keep you dry until you can properly repair it. Sorry about your luck.

I don't see how you could go wrong calling the contractors or roofing centers for seconds or left overs. Heck, one local shop is selling a pallet of used 65 and 80 mil EPDM for $80. Make great waterproof covers...

well i cna find bundles for 19.00 per bundle. but when you only have 60.0 thats only 3 bundles. 1 square of shingles you can buy. i need about 11 more bundles and osb sheeting too. i hate to skip the tar paper. but i may have to. if i can get away from getting caught without a permit. for 75.00 and a permit would probably require tar papaer. before i ptuthe shingles on so the roof warpage could be viewed first. but i have no warpage. so i would pass that inspection. knee walls hole up the roof nicely.

Does your city have an emergency home loan program? Lincoln has a program whereby the homeowner can get a no interest loan for emergency repairs. Maybe Ottawa has something like that.

yea right. these people would rather charge you to tear down the house before they would help you. i know where some tin is at. i may slap that up there. the city probably wont see me put it up there. too many trees blocking the view of that side of the roof.
