How do I get rid of a 12' camper?

Post by Ranger72 »

My dad died last December, and I am going to go pick up his truck in Wyoming soon. The truck is rusty, but sound, so I have no qualms about driving it back to California. However, the old, beat up Aristocrat he had on it is in rough shape, and beyond my ability to fix up. I would like to unload the camper before making the trip back as the truck probably hasn't been run in over a year, and I don't want to strain it (especially the tires).

When I was a kid, I remember junkyards where people could dump this kind of thing for a price, but when I look online all I see are automobile dismantlers. I suppose I could put it on Craigslist for the area when I get there, and just give it away. Anyone have any ideas?

FWIW: Dad's truck is a '72 F250 Ranger, Camper Special.

Call the local dump, it's about $60 per ton to dispose of stuff like that here. I took in a burned up fiberglass boat a few years ago. Loader operator popped it right off the trailer, painless. Figure if you unbolt the dang thing and wrap a long enough chain around the front you should be able to tie off on a loder and pull out from under it. I doubt you'd be the first guy to do it there.

First off... :wel:

So sorry to hear of the passing of your Dad. Before you do anything else, post the camper in the Classifieds Here (found at the bottom of these forums) and you may find a member who is close to where your bump is and would Love to get it.

Good Luck and Godspeed...

The local "Land Fill" aka "dump" will usually take them as long as it doesn't have a Propane Tank in it... just pull it out first... The other thing would be to list it on CL or look for an R.V. salvage place like this http://www.allseasonsfuninc.com/ that might be able to use some of the parts off it. :2cents:

i'd put it on craigslist before the dump. some scrapper will probably come get it pretty fast. it has aluminum and probably some copper wiring in it. or just pull along side the road and unload it and drive off. someone will get it.

NO!! :nono: :nono:
The fines for doing something like that are very, very steep! You do not want to get caught pulling a stunt like that. Call the local dump. They will take it and recycle the metals in it.

Post it on GL for free before you head out. That will give you xtra time to advertise, and you can call and meet them when you get there. I agree someone will want it if it is free. To scap if nothing else. I wouldn't even consider dumping it off along the road. That is just not right.

i meant at a rest stop type of place. large enought to unload it. if left along side the highway the police woul dhave it towed away and then auctioned off by the tow company.

If you do get a scrapper to answer an ad be sure to make them take it away rather than strip it on the property. A lady I know allowed a local scrapper to strip a big truck sleeper that her ex left when he ran off with another woman. The scrapper took all of the aluminum but left all of the fiberglass and rubbish scattered thru her yard.
