Fuel Filters

Post by ScreaminZ »

Ladies and gentlemen, THIS is why we run fuel filters!

Image

I was having trouble with my in-cab tank cutting out on me more and more frequently. There's a chunk of rust floating around that plugs up the pickup tube on occasion, but it was getting to where it acted like that all the time. I finally decided to check my filter. Cleaned it out and all's well again. Oh, and for those of you that hate these filters, this is not the only one in the system. There is one more large paper element filter further down the line. This was to keep the big stuff under control.

I like the clear plastic ones with the paper element, have one on the skid loader and I just back blow it with compressed air to get the chunkies out.

On that one at the least get some real brass fittings for it.

i have one before the pump. without it sand was getting in the pump and poping the one way valves out of the pump. making the pump not work anymore.

Yeah, I had that problem too. That's exactly why this filter got installed. I have one of these on the outlet to each of my two tanks and then one large clear plastic one with a paper element right before the carb.

Wow that's nasty. I bought a nice used, rust free gas tank for $25 at the boneyard (gave it to my cousin when I swapped to the Mustang tank). I now have two inline filters, one near the tank and one after the fuel pump.

Wow that looks bad. Better not to get this in you engine

Just for interest: I once heard from a guy that placing a fuel filter before the fuel pump will suck the filter element out. Is this true? I plan on putting a filter between the pump and carb when my engine is complete. Maybe one shortly after the tank, too.

I recommend buying good filters that can be disassembled and cleaned. You'll save money inthe long run. I have a 100 micron filter at the tank and a 40 micron filter between the pump and the carb.

Yup, just like my coffee. I filter my fuel. A second fuel filter makes sense. Think I may do that.

I also run 2 filters. The one in the pump and a 2nd one near the carb inlet. So far no problems.

All you guys runnin two filter inline, does your second filter filter smaller particles? If not then all the particles that the second filter could stop, should already have been filtered out by the first filter right?

Actually,

is the BEST advice.

You can go overboard and add a sintered bronze fuel filter right at your carb inlet if you'd like, but Bobby's recommendation will do you just fine!

Just like on ship, two valve protection in case one fails. May never need the 2nd one, but it is 4 just in case, HOLY CRAP, comes along.
