lawn mower trailer

Post by fordman »

i have some 6 foot box beam. it is from a old 1966 trailer house tounge. it is thick enough to hold alot. it would do for a lawn mower traielr. but i only have the two pieces. the box beam is probably 8 inches tall. i have a mobile home axle i could cut down and sleave together with another large piece of pip. and make a good axle for the trailer. but the tires woulb ebe kind of tall for a lawn mower trailer. so i considered a tile bed.

i can cut the box beam in half and make four piece of angle iron out of them both. so i would have four pieces total. that would give me a perimeter for the bed. i then could put the mobile home leaf spring perches on the bottom of that frame. and attach the shorted axle to them. i then would be missing the hitch. and some cross bracing for the floor to attach to.

i do not know what thickness the box beam is. but i think it would hold up for a 4 wide by 6 long trailer. what do you think. is this thick enough?

or i found a ski doo trailer for 50.00 on craislist. no tilt though.

i would keep using it in my pickup. but it fell almost off the ramps when i was loading it the other day. kind of scared me.
i have treated wood for a floor in the trailer if i build it.

It should work out ok. If you add a tall drop tail gate you can use that for the loading ramp, and you won't need tilt. I have a homemade tilt one for my movers. It works fine, but I am thinking of selling it and getting one with the drop down tailgate.

i didnt want to do a tailgate load thing. it may catch the deck when loading if at the wrong angle. im just concerned if the metal is thick enough to make angle iron out of it. that mobile home axle and tires will make it pretty high to load with a tailgate.

:2cents: personally i'd go for the skidoo trailer and add what i needed to it rather than messing around trying to stretch the materials, you have to build a trailer ....that trailer most likely already has some tires that'll allow for a decent loading height...and lights and,and,and...

- what kinda load are you planning on hauling? - unlike box tube, angle iron doesn't have a whole lot of structural strength
if we're talking a push mower and some bags ofgrass ,it'd probably be alright, but i wouldn't try a ride -on

its been awhile since i've encountered one but i'm pretty sure that mobile home tongues are 1/4" wall
- still got my first first car 20+yrs later : 69 f100 sorta kinda pretending its a Mercury M100 w/a 70 f350 sport custom cab (factory buckets) 67 grille with 69 ranger cooneyes 68 merc box and hood, some supercool fiberglass fenders i scored way back when, 76 f150 disc brake frontend..currently running a 90 5.0HO 4bbl/c4 auto & 3.50 posi...originally a 360/c6 f100 Ranger with dealer added towpack (incl. kelsey hays trailer brake),boxside toolbox, behind the seat stowage & belly tank...only original parts left on 'er are the frame, rear end, rear springs, and rear bumper...

just enough for a riding mower. i am going to guess that is 1/8 thick material. i'm not sure about the skidoo trailer. i really want it to tilt. i may end up scrapping the box beam and buying heavy duty angle iron and professional make a real tilting flatbed trailer. i was considering a popup camper trailer too. but i have to find one that needs the camper torn off of it first.

Lay that stuff you have on side and it wouldn't be so high. If we lived closer together we could work a deal on my ole tilt trailer.

I'd modify the SkiDoo trailer. Probably as simple as removing one of the bolts that hold the tongue beem on and it'll pivot.

You may try and get a hold of a old boat trailer. Most of them tilt, you could make a good mower trailer out of one.

just in case yer still gonna build one yourself:
i don't know about down there ,but up here its actually illegal to use mobile home axles on anything but mobiles - why exactly who knows...
and :
while i was supposed to be working today i checked out the trailer we use to haul our RamRod diggers (stand on mini skid steers ) its about a 4x6 trailer with a pintle hitch on it and a ramp - the sides of the frame are rectangular box tube very much like your mobile home hitch stuff, they extend above the sides of the decking about 1-1/2'" to 2" -the spring hangers welded underneath
oh yeah -and its got square tube crossmembers

federal law prevents mobile home tires 7x14.5 being reused to move a mobile home. they can only be used once when new. but all the manufacturers are now putting 8x14.5 on the mobile home rims. and they can be reused. the axles. i don't know of any law that says anything about the axles. they are regular 6000 pound axles. with either a drum brake on them or a coaster hub on them. i have not decided what to do yet. i am thinking i will scrap the box tubing i have and price some angle iron. or if i could cut the spindle off of the axle tube i could possibly weld it to the tubing and use it as one piece. i know it would be strong enough. and sit low enough for me to drive up on without the deck getting caught. the dove tail of the end may be ok to do.i typed in tilt bed trailer into you tube and watched several videos of tilt bed and lawn mower type trailers. that showed me some ideas on what to build.

how about some ATV ramps? the ones that are slightly bent in the middle so the deck of the mower won't catch.

i have some long planks. but they are very unsecure when loading into the truck. i dont want to drill or make holes in th bed or tailgate to secure any kind of ramps.

yes those also would need a mount to keep them, from moving around. i dont like riding up ramps that arent anchored in some way.
