Here's a local one on craigslist that a fella put a bed on and was using as a daily driver. I think it's pretty cool...

I am the owner of a 1958 Mack fire truck. I went to a city auction in the town my Father lives in to see if I could score on some goodies. In the line up was their 58 Mack fire truck. I looked at it just because it was in such perfect shape. It only had 6,200 miles on it. Which is not really shocking due to the fact that the town is only three miles long and about 1 mile wide. They had just kept it in the garage all those years for no real reason, while other newer trucks came and went.

I thought it was cool, but knew it would go for way more money than I had or would spend on something like a fire truck. So I bid on a few tools, the bidding was out of hand at this auction, guys were bidding more than some of this junk cost new. I was thinking about leaving, but they were getting close to auctioning the fire truck and I wanted to see how much it would go for.

The truck rolled out and they started the bidding at 1,300 bucks. Not one single sole raised their hand. He said 1,200, no one. Then he said "well, we are not going lower than that, we will put it back in the shop". Still no one. WOW, really? Is this really happening? So I raised my hand and said I would take it. You could have knocked my old man over with one finger. So...now I own a fire truck.

Everything on it is just how it came and is near new condition. it has a 707 cubic inch straight six (gas). I think it has around...2 horsepower. It runs fantastic.

At full tilt, it moves just slightly slower than the speed of smell, which made the 300 mile trip home fun.

That is so cool. Do you know if the pump works? Small pic, but by the looks of it, it looks like an open cab and a wood ladder. Great find!

The pump does work, but won't work while driving. Mine is a closed cab. That is not a picture of mine, I should have mentioned that, but it looks just like it (aside from the cab. I have to go and get some pics of it.

Indeed, pics would be appreciated since they are such cool looking old trucks. I just applied for a job at the Mack plant here in town, might be interesting.

I actually started a thread about them only some weeks ago :D

Here are some more pictures:

Here you can see how little they changed the design between the first design in the mid fifties and the last one in the 90s:

I would LOVE to own one of them someday :D :D :D

There were a few changes though. I used to have a 1960 C 600 and it had dual head lights. I replaced the 292 Y block for a 390 FE but other than that there was little difference between my 60 and my boss's 1967. Both had two speed rear ends, though I only had a four speed and the 67 had a five speed. They were great trucks and I still miss mine though I am not sure what I would do with a C 600 now. They were great to work on, since the cab raised up for any service. The seat was wide enough for three or four fellows to ride in and the bench behind the seat provided a lot of additional space.
