Careless driver destroyed my '51 Willys...

Post by harrysnyder »

Well I've been restoring a '51 Willys CJ3A for several months, and a couple of Saturdays ago we took it out trail riding at an event my company sponsors. It was at an off-road park in Laurens, SC called http://gulchesorvpark.com/ and it was a charity event raising money for cancer. Here is a link to my facebook album where you guys can check out the pictures:

A woman crossed the yellow line and came into our lane, we swerved off into the grass to miss her and she t-boned the trailer pulling the Willys. The Willys then rolled over and over and landed back on top of the tailgate of the truck we were pulling the Jeep with.

Now the insurance company is playing games with me. It wasn't insured but it falls under personal property and her insurance company has to pay, they just want to pay me nothing.

I want to try to rebuild it, anyone know where I can score one for parts?
I build driveshafts.

That really sucks. Hope you get something for it. Don't want to make you feel bad, but we all should look into better coverage for our old stuff. There are options, and they usually aren't very costly, that could make situations like this much less painful. That is a crazy little trailer you were using there.

I agree 100%. I've been thinking of getting classic insurance for my truck about ten years now and haven't since it is my daily driver. If it is ever totaled I wouldn't get $1500 for it and I know it. When I get my 93 on the road I WILL get classic on my 71.
I feel for you about the Jeep. I once had an 1953 M38A1 with a Ford 289 special in it and a warn overdrive unit. That thing was ugly but a blast to drive. Would scare anybody brave enough to get in there with me. It was crazy fast on the road.
Good luck too you about fixing it up. I'll keep my eyes out for parts up here

A friend of mine had a few jeeps about 20 years ago. I drove his '53 CJ3A up a tree once. Those little old jeeps will go anywhere. So sad to see yours all banged up. I hope you can repair it or at least use what you have to restore an other one.

That poor willys. Sue hard!!!! I have always loved the go anywhere personality of the old jeeps. Now most jeeps on the road will never get to go mudding.
