Is it just me?... or is this common practice?

Post by Bullit »

I'm not sure why, but I felt compelled to stop at my local Pick-N-Pull yard on my way home from work yesterday to see if they had any new (old) bumps in. I was blown away to see they had 4 additions to the yard! I found a really NICE what I think is a '67 STEEL grill and front valance in really great shape. Someone was looking for a set of valve covers (I think they found them here tho) and I found some that were covered in oil (NICELY PRESERVED!) on a bump that looked like it was DRIVEN to the yard! There was a 1966 with a perfect front end there too. My thoughts were that the 66 and 67 came from the same owner because they were parked next to each other and had the same look of sitting under a tree someplace together... I was thinking to myself.... I wonder if there's anything the FORDIFICATION group would need from these trucks before they go off to the crusher. There was even one with a factory toolbox...pretty cool find anyway. Anybody else get the "urge" to walk the aisles?

I've been walking junk yards since the 1960's. You're either born with it or you're not. I have a 39 year old son who couldn't care less about old vehicles (where did I go wrong?) and he hates getting his hands dirty/greasy. Course he calls the old man when he's got car trouble...I digress.

Non believers will never understand. They think us fools until one day they comment "geez I like your old truck, I haven't seen one like yours EVER! How much did it cost you 'fix-up'? How long did it take you to build? What kind of engine does that thing have in it?" ...these are the moments you realize the true value of your obsession and the pride you have in your accomplishments.

The true reasons we all walk the pick-n-pull yards is we're dreaming of how we can make something out of someone else's scrap. We're dreaming of what our project will look like when it's completed. We're dreaming of driving down life's highways in a vehicle not owned by many. It's what we were born to do...

I gotta go wander around. Thats where I get lots of ideas for my ol truck. Ever since I was a kid I loved to go see what was in the junkyard! Still do.

I used to love to browse the yards here in northern New Jersey. Now, due to insurance restrictions, your not aloud in them. You have to shop at them like an auto parts store. If they have the part, they hafta pull it. Most places are just stripping down the vehicles and inventorying the parts in a warehouse now. Sad, but true...

I do the same thing... I walk around and look at the bumps and wonder who would need all the perfectly good parts on the trucks that I dont need. But then reality sets in and I am faced with the fact that I have no where to store all the parts, and the pain of shipping. But still, every now and then I come across something rare that I just cant let get crushed and will pick it up even though I dont need it.

But I have started doing this (am I the only one?)... I have taken pictures of the doomed bumps with my cell phone so that there is at least one lasting memory of them before they are turned into scrap metal. But then the pics are too depressing to look at.. lol. Maybe one day I will start a thread with "Doomed Bumps" and we can put all the final pics of our junkyard visits.

I don't like getting greasy, but if it keeps the ol' beast running and going down the road safely i'll do it. Only time i don't like an old car is when it eats part after part of the best available parts, and when it is so rusted it is beyond help.

I have to bring a list as I get so distracted with not only the Bump section
but everything else, And Desert Valley is so huge

I do like stopping by the Luxury car section just to gaze
I barely remember them on the road but the lines and chrome
are are nothing short of spectacular !

I'd like to take a current design crew through there just to see the
look on their faces of what real vehicles look like

sourcing parts is great. as long as they dont cost as much as or more than you can resell them for. plus you have to spend tiem sellingthem boxingthem pritning and shipping. its ok if you have nnothign else to do. i wouldnt want to have a job and try to coem home and do it . theres not enough time in the evenings to do it and take care of other business.

Heading to the local U-Pull-It has been my annual birthday pilgrimage for years, and if I have a free day with good weather, I'll do it again. I love the 'treasure hunt' aspect of it.

In fact, they just opened a new self-serve salvage lot about 45 minutes away, and I'm heading there tomorrow to check it out. The nice thing about this one is that they maintain an inventory list on their website and it shows that they have a couple bumpsides and 4-5 dentsides. Good weather is forecast, so I'm going junkyarding tomorrow! :woohoo:

As for what to save from junkyard bumpsides you find, check out this link:

The main junkyard I go to is about 45 minutes away in Nampa. We just plan to stop by there whenever we go to Boise. Its always good to see what new comes in and to know where parts are when the need arises.

Why is it that the trucks are always the best running vehicles in the family?

What a great way to spend a weekend morning or afternoon or... :D
It's too bad the insurance restrictions are so bad in some places you can't even get in; the pick a parts here won't let under- 16's in anymore. How the heck are you supposed to pass on the pleasure to the next generation?
Anywhere I go I like to check the local yards; even when in Vegas for the sema show. Usually carry pen/paper/camera with basic tools and grab the odd data plate for further research.
