I love the pull a parts. Just walking around looking and finding something I need is a great time for me.
I love seeing the old 50's and 60's cars also. Today's designers should could learn something from them on that I agree. I see a new car today and it looks just like the one beside it. One might be a BMW the other a Ford and I couldn't tell one from the other hardly. No style, no chrome, no flowing lines

I can't go in the summer, ragweed is 6-7' high and I suffer for a week afterwards. it got so bad you had to jump roof to roof to get around. The other nice yard has around 500' elevation change in 700' of horizontal. It's brutal in the summer heat...

Bullit, what area are you from? If the yard is in my parts I'd definetly make the time to stop by...Bullit wrote:I'm not sure why, but I felt compelled to stop at my local Pick-N-Pull yard on my way home from work yesterday to see if they had any new (old) bumps in. I was blown away to see they had 4 additions to the yard! I found a really NICE what I think is a '67 STEEL grill and front valance in really great shape. Someone was looking for a set of valve covers (I think they found them here tho) and I found some that were covered in oil (NICELY PRESERVED!) on a bump that looked like it was DRIVEN to the yard! There was a 1966 with a perfect front end there too. My thoughts were that the 66 and 67 came from the same owner because they were parked next to each other and had the same look of sitting under a tree someplace together... I was thinking to myself.... I wonder if there's anything the FORDIFICATION group would need from these trucks before they go off to the crusher. There was even one with a factory toolbox...pretty cool find anyway. Anybody else get the "urge" to walk the aisles?
Bullit.

I was in a yard the other day and the only straight piece of chrome on a bump was the end of the hood moulding. Picked it and a pair of headlights for my 88 for $20.

FOMOCOGUY,
I'm in the I'm in the Seattle area, Actually, the Yard I go to is in Auburn, Wa. Where are you?
There was a bump in there with stainless window trim. I'll not be going that route but, it's fun to see the parts and
keep hoping to locate something I'll actually need....(like original rear bumper and brackets)..
I'll keep looking anyway..

Re: Is it just me?... or is this common practice?
It is a shame to see what is going straight to the crusher and never even making it to a boneyard. The scrap price is so high that people are hauling off some great old iron. Some of it appears to be drivable condition. I was dropping a load of scrap off and the guys that worked there were talking about a 80's Ch#vy that was parked by the building. Someone had drove it onto the scale then got out and got their money. They left it right there and one of the yard guys had to drive it off. They were using it as a yard truck but everything else goes into the crusher. I have asked about buying parts or even whole trucks but they won't sell. There have been some nice bumps go in there never to return.

Keith, fill us in on your findings! I'm looking to cut out the inner cab corner panels, if I can find some good ones, otherwise I'll have to try and fab them, and you're not too far away from me.FORDification wrote:Heading to the local U-Pull-It has been my annual birthday pilgrimage for years, and if I have a free day with good weather, I'll do it again. I love the 'treasure hunt' aspect of it.
In fact, they just opened a new self-serve salvage lot about 45 minutes away, and I'm heading there tomorrow to check it out. The nice thing about this one is that they maintain an inventory list on their website and it shows that they have a couple bumpsides and 4-5 dentsides. Good weather is forecast, so I'm going junkyarding tomorrow!
As for what to save from junkyard bumpsides you find, check out this link:
