Scored an overhead rack...now with pix!

Post by tmcalavy »

My mech called me yesterday and said one of his customers was gonna scrap his 68 F250...went to look and came home with a nice black overhead rack for just $50. Looks good on the truck...now I have to batten it down and move the rack light right behind the cab. Stroke of good luck.

I was trying to give mine away. No takers so I put it back on the 68 C.S. How about a pic of the install.

I'll try to get a couple of pix tomorrow, after I bolt it down to the bed rails. Too hot right now.

Ya let it cool down. I think they look ok with the big ole rack on em. So darn heavy it makes for a little smoother ride.

Pix are here...basic black metal overhead rack...extends out over the cab. Need to remount the one road light that was mounted on it...need to wire that to the cargo light switch. Or maybe put a bank of six up on the top rail at the back of the cab...four forward, two rearward...any ideas on colors?

Yeah...I'm in Lubbock, or Lubrock...home of Buddy Holly and the Crickets. I like Mancar's truck rack better, actually...his has a nice raised top rail. I hadn't thought about a bank of driving lights until I posted the pix and looked at them. Wonder what I'll need to activate them with the standard cargo light switch? My cargo light is there, but no harness can I find coming from under the dash and switch. The rack I got is definitely home-made and has been patched in a couple places...but I think it's more useful than the camper topper I found a few months ago, and now have stashed right on my east property line...big blindspots with the topper on the truck. Also been thinkin bout a spare tire rack/hanger to put on the front bumper...put the spare in front of the grille. That sucker is heavy and I'm tired of moving it around the bed. My tool box isn't as good as Mancar's...mine's just an old, big wood carpenter's chest...need to anchor it somehow.

Hello tmcalavy.
The rack on your truck looks fine. My Dad always had his spare tire on a front bumper rack. He liked it there. I had a wood box I made for my inbed toolbox that I used for years. I have my running lights hooked up to come on with the headlights. Been thinking about putting them on their own switch, but I will most likely leave as is.

I'd love to find a bolt-on spare carrier for my front bumper...16-inch steel-belted radials are heavier that I care to deal with every time I need to move the spare to mess around in the bed. I need to get out soon and see if I can find the wiring harness pigtail that goes to the cargo light...light is intact, including the plug in...but I can find the wire from the harness that feeds it juice. I was thinking about wiring a couple of running lights to that circuit, lights mounted on the rack/bar right above the cab, just so that my cargo light switch serves some real purpose.
