Back in "the day" - rock concerts

Post by sargentrs »

For all us old farts, and youngsters too, what rock concerts have you personally attended "back in the day". I'll start. Not necessarily in this order (hard to remember if you know what I mean 8) )
All of these seen at Hirsch Memorial Coliseum in Shreveport, La. during the late 70's - early 80's.

Bad Company - Burning Sky (this was my 1st!)
Styx - The Grand Illusion
.38 Special - Wild Eyed Southern Boys
.38 Special - Tour de Force (Ted Nugent was the warm up band!)
ELO - Out of the Blue
Heart - Magazine
Heart - Dog and Butterfly
ZZ Top - DeGuello
ZZ Top - El Loco
ZZ Top - Eliminator

And then on their "comeback" tours...
Foghat
Thin Lizzy
Nazareth
Triumph
Head East
and I vaguely remember seeing James Taylor at a college auditorium in Monroe, La. Man, were we toasted that night!

What about you!?

First concert was in 1976 at the Long Beach Arena... My cousin took me (I was 6) to see KISS. They recorded the concert that night and it was part of the KISS ALIVE II album.

My cousin took me in 1981 to see his friend's band in Hollywood at the famous (no longer here) club, Gazarri's. The headling band was Odin, but the unsigned band that opened for them and stole the show was Motley Crue..
I also went to the US Festival in 83 (day 2) and saw Ozzy, Van Halen, Motley Crue, Judas Priest, Triumph, Scorpions, and Quiet Riot.

Since that time in my teenage years and since, I have been to probably hundreds of concerts. Mostly rock and metal.

I'm embarrassed to say I saw the Byrds in concert in 1966...scheese what an old guy! I also went to most of the Newport outdoor concerts to see the various acts of the day. These were West Coast venues and they started in Newport Beach, California but later moved to any other available location. I saw Janis Joplin, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, all of the whose who of the sixties! Just think, this was BEFORE Woodstock!

Also saw Simon and Garfunkel at UCLA in 1965, I know, before 95% of the members here were even born!

i'm embarassed to say that i've never seen a "big" act play in a large arena ( it ends up costing at least an extra $100 to get to the mainland to see them)
the first rock shows i saw were D.O.A. and the Dayglo Abortions (both are semi- legendary B.C. punk bands)at the local hockey rink and the one in Nanaimo probably 25 yrs ago or more...i was pretty goon-faced ,i think they were pretty goodshows .. i do remember being stranded in nanaimo after the dayglos show - my ride went chasing some tail and ditched me...it was pretty cold & rainy lol!
- still got my first first car 20+yrs later : 69 f100 sorta kinda pretending its a Mercury M100 w/a 70 f350 sport custom cab (factory buckets) 67 grille with 69 ranger cooneyes 68 merc box and hood, some supercool fiberglass fenders i scored way back when, 76 f150 disc brake frontend..currently running a 90 5.0HO 4bbl/c4 auto & 3.50 posi...originally a 360/c6 f100 Ranger with dealer added towpack (incl. kelsey hays trailer brake),boxside toolbox, behind the seat stowage & belly tank...only original parts left on 'er are the frame, rear end, rear springs, and rear bumper...

Larry, you're my hero! Man that's awesome. I listened to them all growing up as a kid but I was too young to see them in person. I wore out S&G's Sounds of Silence LP, and Herman's Hermits A Kind of Hush 45rpm. Daddy was country and Mama was rock and roll. I grew up listening to Hank Williams Sr, Merle Haggard, George Jones, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, Johnny Horton, Flat and Scruggs, Conway and Loretta, Dion, The Supremes, Tommy James, The Byrds, The Animals, the Mama's and the Papa's, Joplin, Zeppelin, Clapton, 3 Dog Night, all during the mid 60's thru the 70's. Mama would let me stay up late to watch Midnight Special. We lived, back and forth, overseas during that time, came back in 1976 and I started my heyday up until 1987 when I started a family. My only regret was I was too young to go to "Yasgur's Garden".

Way to go Robert! Love those guys but never got to see them in person. Either missed 'em when they came through or I had a wife and kids by then so had to drop the "bad habits". I missed out on AC/DC, Def Leppard, Van Hagar, Bon Jovi, REO Speedwagon, Fleetwood Mac and the Eagles and regret it to this day. Wanted to catch their latest runs of "reunion" tours but my wife doesn't go for that.

Good evening,

This certainly doesn't qualify as back in the day, yet it's definitely back in my days. :)

About ten years ago I saw Dave Van Ronk in Santa Cruz. That's the only concern I've never been to, and I loved it.

I remember going to REO Speedwagon right after the tornadoes that ripped through Ohio and Pennsylvania in like 1984 or 1985. It was awsome when they sang riding the storm out. Cheap Trick open for them. Also saw Aerosmith, Boston :hd: but was pretty messed up but I know I was there. I never got to see the Eagles  I heard they put on a great show back in the day.

Thanks sargntrs for the trip down memory lane...

Just WoW....I got lost in so many memories while jotting down these bands...Aside from clubbin' and all that, we were Fillmore East rats. I'm still surprised I need no hearing aids. If I remember right The Fillmore always had two acts and a headliner. .In those days, within months, many 2nd acts became the headliners. What a time. Like the first charity rock concert, that was at the old Madison Square Garden, George Harrison's Concert for Bangladesh. I was in Washington, DC, walking along, got thirsty and ducked into a bar for a beer. Off in a side room that held maybe 40 people, I got blown away in a Rock Down by The Kinks. Go figure. All the way from England and they played there? Maybe I walked into their party. Anyway here's a list. It's not the whole list, it's not the short list, but they were all FUN...

Allman Brothers
Badfinger
Billy Preston
Bob Dylan
Cream
Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young
Delaney & Bonnie
Doors
Dr. John
ELO
Eric Clapton
George Harrison
Billy Preston
Bob Dylan
Fleetwood Mac
Foghat
Four Seasons
Grateful Dead
Hot Tuna
Jethro Tull
Jackson Browne
James Brown
James Taylor
Jefferson Airplane
Jefferson Starship
Jimi Hendrix
Joan Jett
Joe Cocker
Kinks
Led Zeppelin
Lenny Kravitz
Leon Redbone
Leon Russell
Lynard Skynard
Marshall Tucker Band
Meatloaf
Moody Blues
Mountain
Neil Young
New Riders of the Purple Sage
Paul McCartney
Paul Simon
Police
Ravi Shankar
Righteous Brothers
Ringo Starr
Rolling Stones
Santana
Steppenwolf
Steve Miller Band

Awesome experiences Andy! Reading your list made me envious and reminded me I'd seen Joan Jett, too! Some great history there.

Jerry, you too! Funny to see how our tastes changed over the years, ain't it? My first concert was Bad Company and my latest was Casting Crowns!

You New Englanders must've been on the hit list for everybody! I feel like us small town southerners got shorted on the tour schedules. If our kids and grandkids only knew what we did in our prime! Of course, they've never heard of most of these bands.
