your fav & most hated non-bump rides

Post by Whateverman »

just thought this 'd be kinda almost interesting
:out of the vehicles you have actually owned -what are your most favorite (other than your bump - if that is even possible  )and your most hated rides

okay i'll start -my favorite : this was a hard one and almost a tie but my 80 chev malibu beat out my 87 towncar for #1 spot
when i got the 'bu it had a cracked v6 and so i swapped in a low mile 305,tore the muffler
off ,threw some crusty old cragars on 'er and cruised and bombed around it 'er for 3yrs,until the day i loaned it to my bro, whose his boss rear ended hard it in the parking lot at his workplace ..(drunk) :x ...shoved the trunk into the backseat  ... :( the car was rust free and the frame was perfect before this happened. :( .. :( unfortunately the insurance had expired on the bu about a week before..(oops)...

- my most hated car ever & this was really dissapointing cuz i had always wanted one until i had one :89 mustang gt cobra - worst car i've ever had ( got it with only 80 thousand km on it) . slow (despite the 3.55 gears & t-5) , a total gas pig (despite the engine checking out almost perfect ) ,uncomfortable seats,& at the 120 000 km (yeah km - half that and you got miles ) everything started failing (in order) : power windows, the gas struts for the rear hatch ,the door locks, the door hinges ,the shifter, the A/C,the door handles (outside then inside).....the final straw was when i was crawling out the back of the car at the supermarket (because i couldn't get out of either door) and had the 2x4 holding the hatch up fall out , letting the hatch which musta weighed at least 100 lbs hit me in the head knocking me almost unconscious ,and knocking me forward and then coming down hard on my spine..... :x yup,I hated that P.O.S.
- still got my first first car 20+yrs later : 69 f100 sorta kinda pretending its a Mercury M100 w/a 70 f350 sport custom cab (factory buckets) 67 grille with 69 ranger cooneyes 68 merc box and hood, some supercool fiberglass fenders i scored way back when, 76 f150 disc brake frontend..currently running a 90 5.0HO 4bbl/c4 auto & 3.50 posi...originally a 360/c6 f100 Ranger with dealer added towpack (incl. kelsey hays trailer brake),boxside toolbox, behind the seat stowage & belly tank...only original parts left on 'er are the frame, rear end, rear springs, and rear bumper...

Had so many it is hard to pick. I will go with the 49 Ford Coupe as my favorite, 41 Cheby Pickup runner up. 76 Dodge Aspen the worst.

I had a mess of 73-79 Chevy trucks. Had no idea how poorly those trucks were built having nothing better to compare them to. I remember trying to pull 8000 pounds up a little hill with a 79 K30 350/4spd/3.73's/31" tires. Gave it everything it had to hit the bottom at 65. Went over the top pinned in 2nd gear, just sad. I remember re-attaching the steering box to the frame several times. I remember replacing a dozen fuel pumps while holding the pushrod in with one hand and starting bolts with the other in the dark onside the road. I remember catching the saddle tanks on everything, twice I hit bumps in the road and had a radiator pop out of it's mounts and get eaten by the fan. Shimming starters- Really? What kind of joke is that? Guess-a-gear SM465 shifters, those are pretty cool too.

Well, for me, worst and best kinda connects in a round about way. This is going to really go against the grain of everything I have ever been told, but this is a personal experience based topic.

A lot of my family work as mechanics, a few of them work at a Ford dealership. With some help from them, I was able to get a pretty darn good deal on a new F350 powerstroke pickup. This friggin thing was by FAR the worst pile I have ever owned. I am not exaggerating one bit when I say that it never made it a full 1000 miles without a massive failure of some kind. The kind where you need to have it towed to the dealership. Let me put it to you this way, it was so bad, that Ford actually replaced it with a new pickup. Do you have any idea how bad something has to be for them to do that?

The new one was marginally better. It only had a turbo failure and rear-end failure in the first 30k. The thing got crap mileage (when compared to other diesels) did not have the power that I had heard so much fuss about. I was anything but happy.

I had a pretty important job to go to in Anchorage Alaska. Despite my better judgment, I decided to take that pickup. The thing was falling apart like it was made out of Velveeta cheese the whole way up. I did finally make it. When it was time to go back home, I made it about 15 miles and the transmission puked on me.

I phoned my relatives and told them the whole deal. They got back with me and said they had arranged to have the truck shipped back to the Oregon coast (very nice). I had it towed to the drop off point and decided to just get a flight back.

I went off to get a bite to eat and a drink. In the parking lot of the bar was an old, bone stock, 1963 chevy, 1/2 ton step side. It had the original paint on it and was looking pretty rough. In the window was a hand written for sale sign "800 OBO". I offered him five, we settled at 650.

I drove that home instead of flying. That old straight six and four speed never missed a single beat all the way home. I still have that truck and it still runs great. It has been one of my favorites for years. The girl laughed when I pulled up in it, now I can hardly keep her out of it.

was that a 7.3 powerstroke or one of the later ones? i've heard nothing bad things about the 6.0 ones, a friend of mine still hasn't given up on his ,but he seems to ride with me in the ol' 6.9 powered rig i got more than in his own truck
i'm almost ashamed to admit it myself ,but i also have a soft spot for those early 60's chev trucks -yours has a pretty good story attached to it - nice!

It was the 6.0 (both of them). I had the 7.3 before that. It was a pretty good rig really, it never left me anywhere. However, if I'm being 100% honest, it got crap mileage and did not have great power either. Good truck, but not something I swoon over.

Yeah, the 60 to 66 truck are okay and relatively solid. I'm just not a brand loyal guy. I love my 71 F250. I like what I like. I have friends who will swear up and down that whatever car or truck they are driving is the best thing ever, while standing next to it on fire. I'm really not that way so much.

My favorite was my 89 mustang 5.0 GT. It was black with the gray ground kit. Even with a worn out clutch it still drove good. It handled fantastic at 120mph on Hwy 580 in California. It was mustang, I had to test it. Decided to sell it after 3 speeding tickets but would love to have it back.

My favorite is probably my '68 Ranchero because it just seems to keep going down the road and it's not just another pimple on the arsecheek of America's roads. It'll cuise at 70, pulling around 20mpg with the 5.0 5 speed and the 3.55 gears allow it rev pretty good too. I've had 1500lbs of aluminum and copper in the back one time, it's hauled many a load of firewood home amoung other things.

Most hated was the '75 Dodge Dart I bought for $150 when I was 18 (1989) trying to flip it and make some money. Slant 6 / auto rusty white with a nasty red interior. Edned up driving it into the scrap yard a few months later and left it there with dad's new Marine battery from the boat.

Best: 1969 Chevy Bel Air, In-Line Six W/ 2spd powerglide. I could drive that car with five buddies
and a car top carrier from Mpls. to Morson, Ontario. Canada on one tank of fuel and could repair anything on it. 8)

Most Hated: 1975 Dodge Charger, What ever was I thinking :hmm:

My favorite is easy. The 71 F100 SportCustom my dad gave me at 15. I am 48. The worst... I think it would be the 93 Ranger short bed step side, 4 cylinder, automatic. Would not get out of it's own way and got 17 mpg on the highway. I hated that truck. Runner up was the pretty green 95 F150 supercab XL with a 4.9 in it. Also wouldn't get out of it's own way and got lousy gas mileage. Had a 93 Dodge Dakota with the V6 and wish I had kept it. Nice truck, plenty of power and good mileage. Even had a Dodge D-50 which was a great little truck.
A 73 F150 4x4 with a 360/4speed was one tough truck I should have kept. 86 Bronco bought from the same friend and should have kept it also.
The 93 F150 supercab I am working on now my dad bought with 5k on it. A lady totaled it about a year ago by turning in front of my dad. He loved the truck so I will get it fixed back up and painted and that will be my number two favorite truck but will be my daily driver.

I never hated any of the cars that I owned. I would just never buy anything that wasn't "cool". My dad was a mechanic and taught me how to fix things when I was real young. I've been a mechanic my whole life but got out of the business 11 years ago, so I always knew how to check out a vehicle before buying.
I've liked all of the vehicles that I've ever owned.
My 1983 CJ7 hardtop was cool, I drove that when I was working in Malibu, great summer car.
My first car was a 1973 Pontiac Grand Prix with a swapped-in HO 400 motor. The '73 was a one year body style and I think the best Grand Prix made. Mine was a "J" model, PW, PB, AM/FM, A/C, Cruise, etc.
I've owned 5 or 6 '67-'68 Fastback Mustangs, both small block and "S" code, 390's. I still own one of them, a '67 390, 4-speed.
I bought a running, driving '63 F100 Unibody in 1984 for $50. It was my daily driver from 1984 t0 2008. I love this truck and would not sell it if someone offered me $10,000 for it. I have a spare frame, lots of NOS parts and many plans for this truck (big block, lowered, IFS, overdrive with highway gearing).
I had a '72 F250, 390 4-speed, great truck. Needed money at the time and had to sell it :(
I had a 1980 Honda Accord, 2-speed, great car, a zillion miles to the gallon.
I've transformed my '72 short bed into different things than I had originally planned. Half of the motor is a motor that my dad was building before he died, that he never got to hear run, so I guess I'm keeping it, too.
I'm suffering from CRS right now and that's all I can remember but I know there were a lot more vehicles.

my 89 was a total sack of poo poo- musta just been a lemon ,unlike the 83GT my bro had - (which had the warmed up roller cam motor that now lives in my bump) which was killer!

oh -c'mon bobbyford- you musta have at least had one car that let you down everytime you turned around lol!

A running unibody for $50 ? thats sweet! what engine? a 6?
50 dollar trucks are always great,i picked up a pretty crusty (the cab mounts were completely missing - the cab was bolted thru a 2x4 to the frame with a piece of chain punched thru the floor as an added safety measure lol!) but good running 71 f100 (300/t-18 )for $50 - got some duct tape and covered the rust holes in the fenders, threw some used low-pro BFG's on some wagon wheels i got for free ,broke out the black paint and a roller and then gave it a flame job - then had way too much fun with it and had to make it go away....lol!
