Vin/Title/door tag question
I am rebuilding a 67 swb truck for my son, it has title and vin matches the frame but the door tag is missing due to door being changed before I bought. I have a 68 LWB that I am going to use as a parts truck that I also have title for and does have door tag. Question is which title do I put on truck? The one with matching vin on frame or the one with door tag? any thoughts?

I don't think it's that hard to get a new vin issued for a vehicle. You need to have proof that the vehicle wasn't stolen. The DMV will setup an inspection and if everything jives it shouldn't be too much of a pita.

Re: Vin/Title/door tag question
At a certain point it's just a matter of how much you really care. I think you can get door tags remade via some of the mustang vendors. Dealing with the govt. probably isn't worth the aggrevation and using a vin and door tag for a LWB on a SWB truck will raise red flags to the right person down the road.
There's an irony that my '64 fairlane title and door match but not the original body, so while it's 'legal' in one sense it isn't in another. But it's a very straight minimal rust '64 fairlane post car (T-bolt clone eventually). Looks like they did the door swap and repaint in the early '80's, God only knows the rest of the story...

Contact MARTI Ford parts (or something like that), he makes new VIN tags for our trucks. I got one, but found my old one, so I am re-installing my old one.

Re: Vin/Title/door tag question
I have been told but who knows if it fact or not that the main thing was to make sure the frame vin matched title, in which is the swb 67. I am not concerned with title saying 67 and doors being 68, truck is not going to be restored to factory specs, its just dont want to run into problems down road with the door tag. I guess I could have a copy of 68 LWB title that goes to door tags in truck to show I owned both trucks but that seems over kill. Maybe I am putting to much thought into it??

Re: Vin/Title/door tag question
Yeah, I would say that if the door tag matches the registration you'd be allright. The vin stamped into the frame could have been ground off when you removed the rust to paint it. My brother had a 72 ford with a dent body and ran it for a lot of years with no trouble ever. It was titled as a 72.

Re: Vin/Title/door tag question
The tag on the door was never more than the warranty plate. the title and vin must match. the door can easily be removed and replaced. But the framne vin and title vin must match. Some years on These old trucks they look for the Door Frame's warranty sticker with vin and tire load instructions on it before the door and they will look at the frame vin before the door wqarranty tag vin.

Re: Vin/Title/door tag question
I wouldn't even worry about the frame vin. Yeah I could see looking for the frame bin if something was fishy, but if the door tag matched the title I wouldn't bother looking at anything else. My 71 lwb has a 67 swb frame and a 69 bed. It's just a mess

Re: Vin/Title/door tag question
I would make sure that the title and the frame vin #'s matched. I lost the title to my truck a couple of years ago and recently got it replaced. When I went in for the inspection the first place the inspector looked was at the frame stamp. I don't know if it's the same in all states, but I think with older vehicles the DMV goes off of whats on the frame of the vehicle in determining the vin.
