Re: hurricane irene aftermath...
I have worked on cement wall research and the reasont he sand went out is because of the wall. It holds the material behind it that would have washed down and replaced the current sand and maybe even some of the sand from the beach would have bee washed farther inland. In hawaii it is amazing to see the beaches dissappearing due to people needing to be 10 feet from the beach and putting up walls to protect their land. I understand why they want to live there but they are not making the problem any better. Price of progress I guess. At least their wall went down far enough it didn't fall over!

Re: hurricane irene aftermath...
these walls have been protecting homes for a hundred years...the reason they made it so high is because thats where the beach used to be,[thats why the staircase is so high],the sand that was washed away in this last storm took very long time to build up,60" to 72"is a lot of sand...think about how long it would take to dig using equipment, this happenned in 12 hours also ct is protected by long island...it is basically a giant break water for ct residents...my brother in law's family used to have a house on fire island , witch is part of long island and had no seawall until it washed away to sea during hurricane gloria.... :2cents:if not for sea walls ther would be a lot less land...

Re: hurricane irene aftermath...
If not for the seawall's the dumbassed landowners would not build McMansions on the beach either... I never could figure out why folks couldn't figure out that the sand was put there by the ocean grinding against the rocks of the shore so why build on the sand when sooner or later the ocean would be back?

good old govt insurance, the rich can build next to the sea and we all pay for their insurance! gotta love it,no risk for them, they get their home destroyed, and the american people pay to build it in the same spot!!

Re: hurricane irene aftermath...
no govt handouts here...some insurance companies are actually waiving deductibles though...never thought id see that day...
and goldie in case you are worried dont ...because the govt doesnt help rebuild homes on the shore....the homeowner pays huge ins premiums to live there...not much different than living in kansas or someplace else that gets a lot of tornadoes...every one has to live somewhere...i would rather rebuild over and over than not be close to the ocean, but that just me.....
i do agree with you ranchero about the dumbass landowners...my place in capecod is a cottage...built in 1910 and still standing on brick piers...weathered many of storms...knock on wood... but some of these idiots put millions into a home they only use on weekends....its rediculous, but to be honest most of the worst damage here in ct. was in a place called cozy beach witch is an average working class neiborhood that happens to be on the shore...no mcmansions here, some really nice homes that people work really hard to afford...figures it couldnt hit hardest in the rich section you refer to....but even the rich guys are hurting....one guy got caught smashing up the deck on his actuall mansion with a sledge hammer
when a news chopper surveying the damage got him on film...karma is a bitch !!

It wasn't just rich guys with waterfront property that your tax dollars might be helping. There was tremendous flood damage in upstate NY. Some towns are just about gone! The Hudson River in still brown like the Mississippi 100+ miles downstream in NYC. I found this slide show.
