Sea Foam....

Post by sublimer »

I know they're mixed opinions about it's effectiveness, but it was on sale and I figured I'd give it a shot...

Is it best to pour some of it down the carb or should I use the vacuum tube/brake booster? I guess it effectively goes to the same place according to this diagram.

I'll film this experiment, and post my finding :D

It claims to be a great way to clean your engine, and all do all the fancy things it does on the bottle!

I've only heard good to neutral things about Sea Foam and I didn't seem the harm in trying it.

I didn't get a crazy smoke show like I was hoping :/ so I won't post the video I took.

But, I think I have better throttle response and it seems a little more "stable." I won't say I'm disappointed, I'll wait to I change the oil in a few days to see what that did.

read the back of the can for how to use it. Ive use it on every vehicle i own an it made a huge differece on two of them for sure, i had 1/4 tank of gas an a splash an the can in the tank then the rest from the brake booster vac line, keep it running untill the can is done then keep the rpms up for a few min then shut down an let sit for at least ten min then go for a drive, i tend to beat the crap out of my vehicles so i then drive it like im running from the cops haha..... OH GET READY FOR A SMOKE SHOW ON YOUR STREET, some cars are worse then others so you might only get a little smoke.

it was on sale at the local Canadian Tire store (its sort of an auto parts/hardware/assorted misc. store) and because i was going to try doing something to it anyways,i tried it in the ol' lady's 4.0 aerostar which has a real problem with carboning up and ends pinging like crazy because of it..........
- it made a slight improvement and a nice cloud of smoke ,but for way less than in all the youtube videos ...which was kinda disappointing

....i found this out the hard way when i had to replace my heads...(long story) ...you want a real smokeshow? - oil your cylinders down with some dexron2 ATF and then fire the sucker up (after blowing most of it out of the sparkplug holes all over the engine compartment)
....on top of the MASSIVE amount of white smoke from it burning ,the unburnt ATF with get shot down your exhaust pipes and keep smoking for over 45min.....

On carbed engines, I use ATF down the carb every time I do a tune up.
Cheap mans Sea Foam.. chortle.. Even straight water will bust the carbon up.
But I've always used ATF.
EFI engines totally different deal.. I tend to prefer Techron for those..
And that I mix with the gas, unless I'm doing a carbon clean out.

for best results get engine up to temp and slowly pour into carb and just keep pouring just enough to make engine stumble but keep going. Then pour fast till it kills engine. Let engine set 15 minutes or so. On the restart it will smoke like crazy and keep smoking up to 15 minutes.

yeah,it was pretty nasty,i had the front end of the truck still in the garage and there was so much smoke rolling in in the 1st 20sec that after i shut 'er down it took a full hour too clear out the garage with 2 fans........
(then i smartened up and pushed the truck ot away from the house and closed everything down....)

but back on subject here again- before the seafoam experiment i'd just use either water or diesel fuel, they work just as well on carb'd stuff - however ,the ol' lady thinks that seafoam is the most wonderful thing ever now so,i'm gonna run another can through the van this week...or so i've been told

Seafoam will not hurt anything. All that it's made from is pale oil (sewing machine oil).
Naphtha (AKA solvent) and isopropyl alcohol. Pretty harmless stuff for the most part.

I'll vouch for Sea Foam...use it alot in outboards, very good stuff to clean fuel systems and inside the crankcase...other stuff works, too.

It might loosen some carbon on tops of the pistons and in the compression chamber. I don't think it'll do anymore than that but that is my 2 pennies.
The best way to loosen carbon on the tops or pistons and the compression chamber it to get your engine good and hot and spray some water down the carb. while working the throttle to keep the engine running. It'll steam clean the pistons for sure.
If I were going to put anything else down the carb. it would either be tranny fluid or Marval Mystery oil.

So after one day here are some thoughts...

I notice a lot less squeaking noises and other noises that sound like old mechanical things moving.

The bigger thing I noticed is that when I pull the choke out, the radiator fan almost turns my truck into an airplane, holy cow is that thing really turning fast and making some wind! It's got that loud noise that propellers make when taxing down a runway, haha.

I may strap some wings on Lucy and take her for a flight, I'm about 0.25 miles from the regional airport where little planes take off all day. I'll post videos and a tutorial if you want to make your truck airborne too!

The other thing I noticed was my oil light would come on occasionally for 1-2 seconds (normally around turns), I would think this means the oil is low, but my dipstick says full. I'll change the oil this weekend and see if that fixes the problem.

So far, I give Sea Foam a 7/10, I deduct points for not seeing smoke (don't market it like this Sea Foam) and also a poor can design. Make it so it can pour easier if I'm too lazy to get my funnel! I do give it points for making my engine not sound like an asthmatic piece of metal and also for a good price point when on sale for $7 a bottle.
