Old Bench Seat Question

Post by socalcraigster »

I replaced the old bench seat in my 69 Ranger with a newer one (think a 94). Even though I like the originality of the old one and it is not in bad shape, the newer seat is way more comfortable. Anyway I have the old bench laying around and I'm considering trashing it because I do not have the room to store.

My questions are:

1. Is there any reason to keep this old bench?
2. Are they worth anyting?
3. Should I remove any parts before junking it?
4. Can the old seat be restored to look original and be upgraded to be more comfortable.

Please take a moment to let me know what you think.

I really would appreciate opinions and comments.

Thank you.

Mine was rebuilt when I got it...new springs, padding, and upholstry with cloth inserts. It's actually pretty comfortable on longer drives, even in summer heat. But if you've got a late model bench and don't care about originality, you probably don't need to save it.

If you don't want it take a picture and put it in the classifieds area. A while back there was an upholster around here advertising on Craigslist that he would recover our seats for around $350 replacing any springs and foam that was needed. He would give money off for any old seats you wanted to trade in. I do not like the new seats since they don't seem to have any springs underneath. It is all foam to me and that makes it ride rougher to me. Might just be me though.
I would love to have mine professionally restored but cannot afford it. I did it myself about ten years ago and it is starting to look bad again

If the old seat is not torn-up / ragged as so many in our trucks are then there is some inherent value to it. These seats can for about 300.00 be completely restored to better than new condition. I tossed mine after a good find at the Pick-n-pull also a 94 seat. Mine was completely shot just springs no fabric. I would recommend if you have the storage room to keep it :2cents: but I'm sure that there would be many interested here at Fordification.

I save everything, but I'm a huge packrat, so probably the wrong guy to ask.

You did the right thing, If you are happy-that's all that matters. Very possible some of us original GENTS might want it-depending on condition and location-since you are considering the CAN! :)

I save mine for a outdoor Red-Neck couch. If ya one day get rid of your truck for another you may want to put it back in and keep your upgraded seat for the next one. As Vicki used to tell me,"never say never".

I'm debating on whether or not to throw my old away too. I stripped off the cover and foam, they were terrible, it has a few broken springs too. I used to think my rear suspension was too bouncy, turns out it was the seat. If anything maybe I can recover the newer (mid-80's) seat with original vinyl covers?

A man after my own heart. I've got a cousin that used to have one in his workshop. Built a pedestal under it and used it for a couch. His wife wouldn't let him bring it in the house

:yt:
 the redneck furniture trick works good in the garage too, its the perfect height for a coleman cooler to function as a "coffee" (beer) table...
i hung onto a trashed 70 or 71 explorer seat that had the plaid fabric on it i thought that looked way cool in my truck until i caught the thing on fire one day  (...long story..) for way too long and ended up trashing it when i finally smartened up and stopped denying the fact that newer seats are WAY more comfortable and that i was never going to either use it or find someone willing to redo the nasty P.O.S...... especially after the mice built a nest in it :x

if you do ditch it,save the tracks ,they'll make future seat swaps alot easier for ya

Cool... So it was $200 for a straight across 2 tone recover. That is exactly what I am looking for too, so I will go to him when I am ready and I will drop your name as a referral. Maybe he will cut you some love next time you go to him. :)

Yes, it was $200 for the two-tone. Tell him the DWP guy sent you.
