Cab VIN not matching vehicle VIN

Post by fonfixer »

I plan on finding a cab that is better then the one currently setting on my frame, everything but the body is fine. What would I need to do when and if I find a good body to swap as far as the VIN goes? Legally I mean. I can think of a couple different ways but not sure if they the right way. All this is taking place in Louisiana if that matters.

Legally I think you'll have to ask the DMV in your state. Every state is probably different. Maybe somebody else in your state has done it and will answer

When I swapped doors on my 68 F100 before selling it I drilled the rivits out of the vin plate then re-revited them on the proper doors. I am not sure if it was legal but it looked ok. I did not know there was a vin on the cab itself just the one on the frame.

Should be on some years a door pillar tire/warranty information sticker. and the frame vin and the warranty tag on the door. Talk to you DMV/Tag office/Licensing Bearu.

I have been told in missouri you usualy have to make documentation of legal ownership of the replacement cab/door or frame. other parts like the engine and trans and the bed or passenger door and front Sheet metal don't require this. but any time your gonna have to put one vin or the other on the door to match the frame, you have to have it legaly documented.

I mean sometimes you have to replace the door.

I don't want to give em a heart-attack. That is what would happen if I answered the door in the buff. Heck it almost scares me to death when I step out of the shower and look in the mirror.~Mancar1~

As others have said you should check with the state DMV as laws do vary state to state. Again be sure to document everything. Anytime you do anything with a VIN plate it is considered altering a VIN. Unless properly documented the law can interpret it as fraud which is a felony.

67-69 had no vin on the cab. 70 and up al have a sticker on the drivers door pillar. that has the vin on it. when i made a cab swap on my 71. i used a 71 cab. what i did was to peel the clear sticker of of the vin sticker. then i wiped it down with brake fluid. the vin numbers disappeared. when the inspector came to look at the truck. i showed him the vin frame. he couldnt really see them. and then i opened the door and showed him the door tag. as i stood in front of the door pillar. so he couldnt see the sticker at all. marti auto works does make reproduction pillar stickers. so i dont think i was in the wrong. since i was the legal owner of the truck and the new cab. remember each state is different. just check to see what it takes inspection wise. or do the swap and order a new door pillar sticker. or if yo uhave a 67-69 dont worry just do the swap and forget it. remember yo uwant to reuse the door warranty plate on your truck door. if you swap the door out also.
