West Coast Mirrors

Post by Effie »

Aren't there two different sizes on the west coast mirrors? I think I have Junior mirrors, but I'm not sure.

Does anybody have the sizes handy? These mirrors have the Ford oval stamped on the back, at the bottom.

For anybody that doesn't know the west coast mirrors... are the big rectangular ones that take up like the whole window area with the bracket and everything, like working/towing mirrors.

I am not sure there is a size difference in the mirrors, but there is a difference in the mounting of the mirrors. West coast has a 3 point mount and the junior has a 2 point mount. I will measure the mirrors after work if no one else gets to it first.

I have a set of each type of mirror you are talking about for my project. I am unsure as to the correctness of my info but I can tell you the differences in mine. On the junior west coast set already on my truck the assembly mounts on a single vertical mount with two attatching points......one above the window on the door and one lower on the door. However my truck itself has what appears to be yet another hole drilled into it that appears factory near the leading edge of the door. This hole is perfectly spaced to allow me to mount the other set of mirrors I have which I have always referred to as full west coast style. The difference being that they use a third mounting point where that hole is and use an additional bar that creates a sort of odd tripod mount. In addition to that the full west coast set as i call it extend a good bit further away from the vehicle.........requiring extra attention to them in tight spaces when driving. Funny thing is that BOTH sets of mirror heads are identical. And yes....I know for sure that both sets are original ford factory pieces. From what i have seen of old trucks around here it is my guess that the wider set was intended for something like a 12 foot or longer F350 flatbed truck or probably most any of the 250 or 350 class sold for either towing in mind or intended for special use.....camper .....wrecker......dump.......etc. Hope that helps some.

Thanks, that does help. Both sets I have must be Juniors then, as they only have the two mounting holes above and two below.

There is a 3rd set for vans in the mid 70's that are the Jr's but have different mounting arm and attachment areas. Not sure if that transfers over to the dent era trucks or not.

Well, one set I got off my '66, the other set off a '68. I haven't compared them to see if the arms and mounts look the same, but I imagine it would be.

Thanks for the help. ;)

To be clear, all of our pickups, whether they are mounted on a three point or two point bracket are west coast jr. mirrors. The west coast jr. mirror is about 12" long (the mirror itself.) A west coast mirror is approximately 16-17" long and where mounted on the bigger trucks like F600's and semi trucks.

Steve, your last picutre is a great represenation of this. Your flatbed in the middle and the green pickup have the jr versions, and the grey/blue flatbed on the end has full west coast mirrors.

The middle picture is not a Ford Mirror or at least not one that I have seen. The two toned truck closest has the regular west coast JR mirror but in the bottom picture I think you are also seeing the spot mirror below it making the mirror look taller.
I know what you are saying about the mirror head itself. I have seen the F600's and larger trucks with the taller mirrors than what is on out F100's or F250-350's. Used to drive a 66 F600 oil truck with the taller mirrors on it. I would call them the West Coast type. I would say that our F100-F350 have West Coast Jr's with two different mount.
Of course you have to realize I know very little. lol

The two tone truck's mirrors are not original Ford mirrors. They are (were) huge!

I thought the black ones on my flatbed were from Ford. I sold them when I bought the Stainless ones so I can't check now.

The mirrors on that black truck look just like the mirrors on my Maroon Monster. I pretty sure they are original.

Those are what is on my truck now. Those could use some polishing and new stainless hardware though.
