Whitewalls or blackwalls

Post by 91Bear »

I've got some new tires for my truck. All the literature shows the 1969 trucks with whitewalls and since my truck is bone-stock I've thought about letting the whitewalls show.

But, whitewalls on a truck are kind of ridiculous if you think about it.

So, white or black?

My truck, for reference:

I bought BF Goodrich blackwalls, but I kinda wish I would have went with raised white letters. Blackwalls are a lot easier to maintain. If your staying original I would think Blackwalls give it a better look.

I've always admired your truck for the 'Factory Fresh' stock look

With that being said some models with the tu-tone and full wheel covers I think
look better with the WSW's, especially the Explorer packages and the spoke covers.

Just my 2 cents. :D

I have stuck with black sidewalls, thinking, "It's a truck" - - -
It does seem to be about your personal preference. :fr:
IIRC, when my Dad bought The Old Girl new; it had blackwalls. BTW, your truck is gorgeous!

you have an EXCELLENT truck. Not a fan of whitewalls-but if you are trying for original-go white. It sure is sweet in blackwalls!

91Bear, you have a great looking truck and set of tires. What size are they?

My truck is also bone stock and I put 215/75/15 (stock size approx)blackwalls with white raised letters on the wheels. I found a michelin truck tire(XC LT4) that has 'old-school' lettering and tread design on it. Perfect fit for early 70s truck look. Unfortunately that tire has just been discontinued.

I definitely prefer the whitewalls---The only reason I don't have them now is I have old Keystones on it and they would look cheesy with whitewalls...But stock white rims and dogdish hubcaps?...The truck will look even more striking...

I kinda agree with ya!! Whitewalls do set a two-tone off nicely.

Good afternoon 91Bear,

I think black-walls are better suited to your truck's looks (which are gorgeous, by the way). The whitewalls look great on Phil's two-tone truck, but on your uni-color truck I think they'd look out of place.

Of course, your truck is going to look fabulous no matter which you choose, really.

As much as I do like whitewalls on my truck, like Robroy, I do think blackwalls are better suited for yours. I don't believe the whitewall would add to the looks, which by the way, that is a very clean original looking truck you have.

I'll add another vote with Robroy and Phil105. :) Solid color trucks look better to me with blackwalls. Something else too is whitewalls are getting harder to find. I just put 4 new ones on my 72. I wanted Brigstone, Michelin or Goodyear but apparently none of them make whitewalls anymore.

Go to Diamond Back Classics website - see if you don't find what you like -they actually make a whitewall out of whatever tire you like - AND - far better quality than Coker Tire (in my opinion and I've bought from both over the years)
