I bought it from a friend of mine in the mountains who had a wrecked 70 in his yard. I was hoping it was a 390, but near as I can tell from the bore and the numbers it's a top oiler 427. I don't think it has the correct heads, but it seems pretty clean, had been overhauled recently and rotates smooth. Have to find a builder of 427's, ask about maximum bore on a 427 block, and run block numbers, but for $125 I won't complain! Pics in the future. Now I have to decide to either sell it or put it in my 70 F250 4x4!

As far as max overbore on a 427, there is a "rule of thumb" of a max at 0.030 over. You won't really know for sure without a sonic test. Some will take more that 30 and some will take less. They are a bit thin walled for the most part.

I have a .060 over center oiler so .030 max in not really so, one must do sonic checks on these things. Congrats on the score/find !

Ok, some details here, and it is getting a bit confusing. I have torn the engine down, and I do not believe the heads are correct for the engine (D2 series). I have measured the bore and stroke (approx on the stroke). The bore is .040 over, and as near as I can figure it is about 4.276 or so ( I hate Snap guages) and the storke is approximately 3.75 inches. A 427 had a bore of 4.23 and a stroke of 3.78, so that sounds about correct. But the casting number and block set up are weird. According to some sources, all 427's were cross bolted on the caps, and some sources say not all were. The block is not cross bolted into the caps. Also, the block # is a bit difficult to read, I can definately see the C for the first ID, eith a 6, 7, 8, or 9 for the second (it is a bit over casted if you know what I mean), the third is a M, and the fourth looks like an E, but could be something similar (also has residual cast blobs that make it hard to read).

A C6ME or C8ME could be a 428 block, but the thing that is confusing is the 428's had a bore of 4.13 and could not be bored too much without getting into the cooling jackets, and had a stroke of 3.89 or something close to that. The bore being so big at 4.276 with the stroke at 3.78 makes me think 427, but the block number, although not clear, may indicate 428.

Things that make you go...HHHmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!

Any takers on ideas?

I think only R code 427,s were crossbolted. The other were not. When the side oiler came out it had crossbolts and screw in freeze plugs. It could be a marine block?

I've heard a marine block may not have have cross bolted mains, but it seems there are no solid facts on it. It definately isn't a side oiler. I may have to take the block in and see if had sleeves put in to allow a greater bore, besides checking the crankshaft. The cam was installed improperly, so a lifter was eaten up, so the assemblers didn't really know what they were doing, as far as I can tell. It may be a piece mealed system. Might not be a Score, but since I mainly wanted the crank and con-rods, I will still be happy.
