Man I agree, when I was searching for my first car years ago I would stalk the alleys and knock on any door that had something sitting under a car cover. Nobody ever wants to sell what they have. I got a lead on a guy that had a "few" storage yards around southern california and was in poor health. He seemed nice enough when we chatted on the phone, so he gave me the addresses of his ELEVEN storage yards. I spent about a month with my friends pouring over these places. I made a list of possible vehicles I would be interested in, because I had a few bucks to spend back then. By the time I got back around to calling this guy, he was in very poor health and in the hospital practically on his death bed. Something changed in that month because he became super grouchy and wanted to know why these kids were on his properties (I had been dealing with his son at this point) Anyways, to make a long story a little longer... the guy wouldnt sell anything he had and his son wouldnt take any of my phone calls after that.

I just dont understand what people think they are going to do with stuff, I can understand your situation Woods because your using your stuff for restoration and to help people out when they need parts and to sell it off. But this guy was on his DEATH BED, its just irritating. lol

But at any rate, maybe you should charge admission to your yard and let people have all they can carry for free

I would be the first one there :D

Nothing wrong with hoarding. I am a dumpster digger from the word go. Course like you woods, I collect a lot of stuff figuring someone may need it. I also give a lot of stuff away.

There are two things that I am sure of in this world...The only way to find something you know you have is to buy a new one...And, sandwich bread seems to clean grease off of your hands better than any hand cleaner available on the market. I just scrubbed my hands with some sort of pumiced based cleaner until I could see bone. I then grab a sandwich and the bread looks like I cleaned out the bottom of a Dana 60 with it.

I have never gotten the hang of body work either. Now paint...I can paint pretty good, but painting a washboard good does not smooth it out.

Tell you one of the big hang ups that I need to get over. Harley parts. See, I was the owner of a performance based Harley shop for a number of years. Back when I was doing that, parts were worth a lot of bucks, just about anything. I am of course talking about the big craze when there was a huge run on them (the 90's). Anyway...I still have LOADS of stuff and it's all like new or new. Today, it's really not worth anything and really very few people work on or build their own bikes compared to back then.
It's hard for me to let go of a set of say, a set of cylinder heads that at one time I could have gotten 500 bucks out of (and did often) to the 70 bucks I have to beg someone to give for a set now. 70 bucks...I just dropped a hundred and thirty bucks to fill up my diesel pickup, 115 on groceries, 320 at the vet for my stupid dog a hundred and some bucks for the TV bill, 85 for new tags for the pickup and 200 for a birthday present for the old man...and it's only Tuesday. So when I see 70 bucks...I think...do I really even want to to talk with somebody for 70 bucks.

So...here I sit on a mountain of Harley parts that are worth less than a meal at red robin.

I am glad that you posted this woods. I am in the process of cleaning up our garage of all the things we moved from our last house and now have been sitting for close to three years. My plan was to consolidate it into a manageable pile of good stuff and get rid of the rest, that way I will have room or my bump parts. I have had the high boy up and running again for a few months and have already collected 4 doors (only two of which are better than the ones on the truck), a grill, half of the wiring harness for a 75 dent, misc electrical parts from said dent, drive lines from dent (they don't fit in the bump but may be usefull some day), and god knows what else. I am going to take this stuff to the dump his weekend and get into hoarding myself which I can easily do by the way.

Driveshafts...I hardly ever toss a driveshaft. I am always doing some kind of a weird engine and trans combo in something it was never meant to be in. So I end up making a driveshaft for it. Sometimes I will even get lucky and have one that is the right length already.

Im not really a hoarder myself Im just a really disorganized general store. I have lotsa crap I have no need for but I keep because EVERYTIME I decide to toss something out a week later I find something where I need it. I was always into electronics stuff from as far back as I can remember. If some guy said he was cleaning his basement and had a pile of old parts I was there in a flash loading boxes of old radio components and equipment that barely worked. I still have most of the stuff so if anyone needs antique radio parts I probably have them.

I have 3 early 70s Honda Trail 90 bikes and a mid 60's Trail 70. none of them run but I have them. They might be worth more than I realize

The mechanic at the airport had the front half fuselage from a Cessna 150 sitting outside. Yep its in my backyard. Its not good for anything except its a heavy chunk of aluminum. You shoulda seen the looks on peoples faces when I had that in the back of my truck. I have some aluminum wingtips from a Piper Aztec that went down in the river. Perfectly good too. I think Ill keep the propeller to hang in the garage.

I guess i get it from my grandfather because his shop is nothing but junk everywhere. He has more mowers for parts than enough. If anyone had a mower out by the curb for dead, he was loading it up. I usually got them once he got them running but it was always obvious why people set them out in the first place.

What state are you in? I used to be bad about dumpster diving myself. I love woodworking and if I passed a roadside dumpster and saw some piece of furniture or something, I couldn't help but stop and pick it up. "I can fix it!" I had to put a 1 year expiration date tag on things when I took them into the shop. If I hadn't done anything with it in a year, I'd take it back to the dumpster. Sadly, if it was still there a week or so later I might bring it back home and put a new expiration tag on it :D I once found an antique high chair that had a potty seat under it. Took it home, refinished it and made a cap to seal off the potty seat and it became my baby girl's high chair. She has a TV stand at her apartment that she's carried around since her first apartment that I picked up at a dumpster and refinished 25 years ago. Since I've moved out here to Georgia my taste's have changed. Now I hoard bump parts

That's a bit far for me to drop by and check out your "hoard" but I'll be needing a bunch of stuff during my build and I'll make sure I check with you. Just trying to help you thin the hoard :D Thanks!
