Sum of my days accomplishments. Cut the two dust shields apart and taped them together. INstalled andit worked out well, hoping for no breezes on the road.
I pulled the steering column back out for paint and went ahead and drilled a 1" hole with a step bit, then cut the top of the dash loose with a 10" sawzall blade. Being long it worked well for the end caps.
The 'new' dash is in pretty good shape, came out of my buddies '72 F600 wrecker. I had welded a plate for the stereo to sit on but otherwise it's straight and in good shape.
I also spent an hour or so cleaning out the truck (except the floor that had the new carpet on it. Now the truck doesn't smell like a chicken coop and the paint even shined up a bit.
The steering column turned out ok, going to graft the dash back together and start the wiring before putting the column back in. I also have a few holes to plug, one for the 5 speed shifter and another for the hydraulic clutch master cylinder.

A couple sheetmetal screws later... I think I'll be ok. The steering support isn't quite lined up but I can notch the oops out of the way. Note the steering column Vis Gripped to the frame rail for reassembly. Nate stopped by for the photo op.
Nate holding the column. Behind the glare the orange pointer cleaned up wonderfully with some hand cleaner and the brightwork polished up fine.

Me either...
Spent the morning tinkering with the dash panel. for some odd reason I wasn't thinking and the F600 steering column is different so I've been notching the dash for the F350 column. You can see the difference in the picture above. Otherwise slow and steady wins the race.

Got the first coat of paint on the dash and touched up some dings on the cab. Like the guy with the charger said, it repairs really easy.
Hoping for a second coat in the morning and maybe start reassembly later.

I don't know, might get rid of it. I liked the work too but I really want to have a reason to make the CD player bezel so I need a stock dash to fit it into. Make sense?
On other news I think I'm going junk yarding today. I noticed last night that the electrical switch is missing for the shifter and I need a throttle cable too. Truck probably won't run today since the paint hasn't cured yet. Once the garage warms up I'll go give it another quick coat and gather up the tools for the day.

That does make sense. I would use it in my truck but I don't have the skills to cut the dash out like that Keep up the good work!

Today's my birthday so I went junkyarding up in the mountains. Needed to connect a few dots between the Ford and Dodge. I found a tranny shift linkage rod on a '74 F150 4x4 and a couple throttle cables. One off a '87 Turbocoupe looks about right. At one time I had six of them in hand walking through the yard. No Cummins to be found so I figured I'd use a Ford cable and modify the 6BT bracket to hold the sheath.
And some shots of the dash in true blue color.
Hoping to start reassembling the steering and brakes tomorrow.

Made another trip up to the junkyard today, left one of my good pair of knipex channel locks there. Went shopping and got the mechanical speedo drive and the rest of the shifter stuff off that 4x4 truck.
My oldest kid was helping me get the wiring dressed into the cab. I need to get the tranny wiring dressed in too.
I've been chasing the power steering hoses too without much luck. I guess it's all in the details...

If you have a local hydraulic shop they can build you one. Probably for less than what you would pay for one in an auto parts store. I have $11 in mine.

Ford pumps are one size larger than the Saginaw in the Dodge / Cummins. I tried several up at the junkyard, 94ish F250 pump end was different vs. the Sag. I may be able to double flare the PS end of the Dodge hose and just use it but 3/8" line doesn't flare very easily.averagef250 wrote:90's ford van PS hose should fit.
Speedo cable, Dodge one has a plastic snap clip on one end and threaded on the other. The Dodge tranny adaptor I have is larger than the one peice cable. NAPA showed the same cable being used back to '81 but they also showed a 2 peice cable (which they didn't have to check). My tranny end looks 7/8" thread, Ford speedo is 5/8" thread.

Looks like 2wd bumps use a 3/8 inverted flare at the box and the gen1 dodge pump has a 16mm O-ring fitting, but it may be an 18mm, I can't tell which end is which by the diagram.
Looks like A 90-93 E series with a 5.8 uses a 37" long hose with 16mm O-ring on one end and 3/8 inverted flare on the other. I say looks like because the chart lists the pump fitting as 7/16 SAE, but I'm sure that isn't right. The picture shows a metric O-ring fitting there.
