Guys (and gals) I wanted to get this up early for all to have a chance to see before Friday. First I will again thank all of you here on the site that are actively serving!
And I have found what seems to be a pretty complete list of freebies for all of us who share being honorably discharged veterans / or active / or reservist of the United States, (there's links here for Canada also). You name it-it seems to be here:

So...my Friday's agenda is as follows (I'm taking a vacation day):
1) free Krispy Kreme donut
2) free car wash
3) 10% discount at Lowes for some things I need for the house
4) free lunch at Texas Roadhouse
5) free dinner at Appleebees
Then on Monday a second vacation day...
free dinner at The Golden Corral

Never asked for anything for my status...until two years ago when the witch left me. No job / post 2nd back surgery and the VA would not give me any medical due to the witch's paycheck being figured into the application. There's things that need changing to protect us-yet I am very grateful for what we do get!

Home Depot gives us a 10% off year round.
I go out of my way to help get other Vets. pointing them in the right direction for VA assistance. The $$ compensation, and the medical care are two seperate things. How you apply for each is a different avenue. I am sure the vets on here know this already, but if anyone has any ?? PM me and I will gab with ya on the issue. It pains me to see Vets. who qualify missing the boat so to speak.
I have a friend who was badly wounded in Nam. He lives on next to nothing. All is documented and I am sure with his condition he would be rated at 100%. I can not convince him to take the next step because of the negative stories he has heard from others about the VA. It is sad and frustrating. Can not help others if they are not willing to help their self.

Happy Veteran's Day everyone. It's only the second time in my life, (since leaving the Navy over 25 years ago) that I'm off of work. Mike, good videos-thanks for posting.

Very Moving Story for Me

I was in HD a couple of weeks looking a blade for a saw and this young guy asks me my opinion on a chop saw. So we get to talking and he tells me that he just bought his 1st house and is building a shed.

I soon learn that he is a veteran. So we talk for over an hour about all his missions in Iraq. I come to find out that he received three purple hearts and was released because of injuries. He was just a kid! Anyway he showed me many nasty pictures (many of body parts) on his Iphone. Then, he showed me pictures were members of his squad that were killed in Iraq. And others were friends that came home and committed suicide. He told me that his biggest worry is that he will forget those who died. I was very moved. I gave him many geopolitical reasons why his service in Iraq was vital and not to listen to those who say the real fight is in Afganistan. I stay in touch with him occasionally.

But here is something that I learned and was truly disturbing to me - If a soldier commits suicide while on duty, or subsequent to their service, they will get a military burial, but NOT a condolence letter from the President/DOD. This WAS a long-standing unwritten rule.

HOWEVER, it appears that President Obama "just announced a reversal of a long-standing policy that denied presidential condolence letters to the family members of soldiers who commit suicide. "

A Thank You will never be enough for the freedom I've enjoyed my entire life, So many have given more
then I ever could to ensure our freedom and the ones who on this day continue to unselfishly defend America
and people who can not defend themselves but have a yearning for the freedom that our Veterans have secured

My wrap on the day...
1) Saved $4.62 at the Home Depot (where the clerk blatantly informed me this is the only day that I (just being honorably discharged/not retired/not active duty) can save the 10%. I bit my lip as I almost told her that's why I don't shop there! But I got the one product I needed there at a discount.
2) Saved $21.86 at Lowes, (they give honorably discharged veterans the 10% discount all year long).
3) Ate an awesome free lunch at The Texas Roadhouse, (they are heavily involved with building homes for returning disabled veterans).
4) Got a free car wash here in Chattanooga.
5) Took my little girl dog for a one mile walk to try and walk off lunch LOL!
6) Ate an early dinner for free at Chili's.
and...The Golden Corral free dinner is Monday.
Feeling pretty blessed and fortunate today, as so many like ya'll spoke of never make it home!
And the flag just came in for the night. I hope to have a light out there shining on it soon-then it will only come in when inclement weather hits us.
