Bump > Dent
Well, I have come to the conclusion bumps are better than dents. IMVHO. I have a 1977 Dump truck and a 1970 F250. I love them both the same, but the bump was better made and I like the FE over the Cleveland.
Again, they are both awesome, but the bump has more heart or something. The '77 has shoulder straps, throws concrete and CR-6 or sod out like it was packing beans, gets more comments, but the bump is sturdier, left ignition, cooler dash etc etc.
Thanks

I agree. On the trip to work, there's a real sharp '77 short box that's been totally redone, up for sale. New brown metallic paint, nice wheels and tires, etc. It's a great looking truck, don't get me wrong, but there's just something missing. Must be the bump down the sides.

I forgot one of the most important details of the bump, and maybe the most important in all automotive history: the door locks. Saved my a** more than a few times.

Re: Bump > Dent
Drove my 79 for about 10 years, (and two more dents and my 76 EB before the 79) before getting my 71. So somewhere over 25 years driving dents-then...along came my 71 one ton dually!left ignition
The keys are still in my right hand 8 years latr when I get in the truck!

Re: Bump > Dent
In my area it seems as though the bump:people ratio is pretty high, there's lots of em. You also can't help but notice how many utility trailers are out there that are made from a bump bed/frame. You might also notice the total absence of utility trailers made from dentside beds.
Might also notice, if you've been around dents, how the beds don't hold up very well on work trucks. The tailgates often don't shut well and the sides are flimsy, especially where they come together with the floor in the rear.
Compare, if you have the chance, bumpside door hinges to dentside door hinges. Lift a dent door, then a bump door, or a hood or fender. Tad more steel in these older ones.
It's actually pretty amazing to me the miles and use of my '70 and the driver's door hinges don't sag one bit.

Re: Bump > Dent
I love my truck and definetly prefer it to the dentside trucks. That being said, I have to be fair and credit the dents in one area that the bumps lack and that's road/wind noise and sound deadening. I've owned a number of examples of both trucks and I can honestly say both my 78's (F100 and F250) were much quieter at highway speeds than either of the bumps I've owned. My F100 was about as quiet and smooth as a newer car. My bumps remind me more of the 65 F250 I used to own.

Re: Bump > Dent
In high school a buddy of mine bought a 79 that hadn't had a tailgate in quite some time. The bed didn't seem to have been abused, but the sides would wobble back and forth like flags in the wind. He had to use a ratchet strap between them to keep them from moving. Eventually a buddy of his spent an afternoon welding up all the cracks in the metal and that kind of took care of it, but he never could get a tailgate to fit right.averagef250 wrote:Might also notice, if you've been around dents, how the beds don't hold up very well on work trucks.
