Those are stock springs. Are those by any chance a 3 piece spring retainer? If so, your noise may not be a lifter. Check them carefully.

The code on the block suggests that it's original to the truck, so I'm glad those are stock springs. I'mnot sure what type of retainer you are referring to. Aren't they all 3 piece (one top piece with two lock halves)? It sure sounds like a lifter tick, but only when it's been running a few hours or when it's like 100 degrees, and only at idle and worst when it's been hot, then shut off for a short while (like 20 minutes), then re-started. I figured it was bleeding off.

It's probably a lifter. They had these ones where the top was a funky two peice design.

Well, she's all back together. I wrapped up a few odds and ends today and it moves under it's own power. I still have to modify my throttle return spring setup a little, but 15 minutes worth of work tomorrow and I'll be out doing some shakedown runs. I did drive her around the block today and all I can say is HOLY CRAP. What a difference! It feels like it gained 1000 usable rpm, and the more I get into it the more it wants to go, where before it felt like it was really straining to gain any rpms. :woohoo: It feels like it's supercharged compared to before. It's going to be really tough trying to keep my foot out of it to get any kind of mpg's now! I really need to put a tach back in her too. Here's a pic:

Now instead of it being old ford dirt colored everywhere it has subtle tones of old ford blue and chrome in the mix. 8)

I knew you would be happy with that. You will get better MPG when you get tired of driving it hard and have it dialed in the way you want.

Thanks! As woods suspected, it's just a basic 600 Holley. It's giving me a little trouble, though. I started a new thread on it just to keep from clogging this one up with more off topic stuff.

Woods, if you saw the other thread I'd love to hear what you think. It's not acting like any other 600 Holley I've installed before, so I'm leaning toward a mechanical problem or dirt somewhere....

Absolutely! As soon as I get the bugs worked out I'll be doing a run. I'm excited to see what the fan swap and carb swap bring for mpg's.

Well, the carb is about as dialed in as a box stock carb can get and it's running very well. I've decided that what I'm going to do is do a mileage run with the current setup, then do another after the carb is dialed in with my next addition, which will be a digital air fuel ratio monitor. I want to tune it in as close as it can possibly be, so my xmas present to myself is one of these: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 97.c0.m619
It will be neat to see how far off the carb is out of the box.

Joe, I had some good luck working with my secondary jets on the 600 that's on my truck.

I bought this kit from Holley: http://www.holley.com/34-6.asp

I gets rid of the secondary metering plate and replaces it with a full metering block similar to what's on the primary side.

:yt: You will be suprised with your results. I bought the same exact one for my 63 Chevy Impala to help dial it in. I was off about two jet sizes and that was from doing plug readings before. I actually picked up 2/10th of a second on the quarter mile and an average of a mile per gallon on the MPG front. :D
I was thinking about that same gift for my bump and myself since I have had such good results with it on my car :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:

So what does this do? I guess in the event that I don't get my ideal a/f ratio during hard throttle situations I would be able to taylor it to my liking?

Cool! Thanks for the input on the monitor. It's good to hear from someone who has some first hand experiance with something before I buy it.
