Trip to the junk yard
Went to heaven today, Pull A Part in Norcross, Ga. This place is huge. The Ford section holds about about 1000 - 1200 Ford/Lincoln/Mercury. Went looking for rear axle housing assy for my stepson's '99 Grand Cherokee but he got disappointed. Me, on the other hand.....
I just went for the shear joy of going but managed to pick up all the pulleys and brackets I need for a serpentine setup on my 351w build for the bump - $84, included p/s pump and alternator. Only had a couple of classics and they were pretty picked over but the sheet metal looked good.

Moreland Ave is better for old stuff.
The first engine (Scratch that, not sure what it is)
The second is an FE, probably a 352 or 390, I am not up on my Galaxies, so I am not sure which is more likely.

Thanks, Robert. Thought it was something like that. I'm not up on the FE's (sacrilege I know). What's the "Moreland Ave" place you mentioned?DuckRyder wrote:Moreland Ave is better for old stuff.

Thanks, Josh. That one threw me. I've never seen that kind of intake setup with that odd oil filler(?) tube. Interesting. Thought I might have stumbled on something unique or rare. It's pretty much toast, I'm assuming, having been opened up and exposed to the weather like that for who knows how long.mr_josh wrote:First one's a Y-block of some variety.

Re: Trip to the junk yard
Got it. I went to the Atlanta North one. It's a little closer to me but still an hour and a half drive. I'll remember that next time I need a "yard" trip though. Actually I could probably get there faster, because of the highway speeds, than the North one. It's 70 miles but I-75/285 moves at a pretty good clip.

Re: Trip to the junk yard
Every Y-block I've ever seen had that style oil filler tube. If I had to venture a guess as to which version I'd say it's a 292. If memory serves me correctly the earlier 239, 256 and 272 cube versions used a different carb mounting flange. I've never seen or heard of a 312 with a 2 barrel. I see one set of rockers is missing. Y-blocks had a lot of problems with the oil supply galleries for the heads plugging with sludge and trashing the rockers for lack of oil. The exhaust manifolds are also gone. Cracking manifolds was another common Y-block problemsargentrs wrote:Thanks, Josh. That one threw me. I've never seen that kind of intake setup with that odd oil filler(?) tube. Interesting. I just found one myself in a 57 Skyliner at our local pick a part. Carb is gone but it's otherwise complete.

Re: Trip to the junk yard
I am suprised you had such luck at the Pull Apart in Norcross! I've been there before but everything was junk or not old enough. I guess they get some old stuff every once in a while. When I was younger(back in the early 90s) there were some great junkyards just above Norcross below Duluth in area nicknamed Mechanicsville. Back in the 1970s and earlier, when cars got stolen in Atlanta they eventually turned up in one of those yards in Mechanicsville.

Re: Trip to the junk yard
Actually, I was a little surprised to see those 3. There isn't normally any old iron there. The import section is far larger than the domestic. There were quite a few 80's trucks and a couple of dents but not much else that era and everything was pretty picked over.

Re: Trip to the junk yard
Sadly, the old stuff makes better fodder for the crusher.
It takes far less old cars to make loads for the shredder than it does econo boxes. Also the crusher operators like to use big cars and pickups from the 60's and 70's as the bottom car in a stack. It makes the stacks a lot more stabile when loading and unloading.

Re: Trip to the junk yard
Well today I went to a junkyard to look for a vintage gun rack to put my bump(which used to have one years ago). I found exactly what I was looking for, a nice 70s era gun rack in great shape that fits exactly to the drilled holes in my truck's cab. Bought it for $10. While I was there, I made some pictures of some of the older stuff in the yard. Thought I'd share some pictures with y'all. Saw about 10-14 bumpsides(took pictures of most of them). See link at bottom for entire photo set from today:
Saw this 'homemade' dually bumpside. Never seen anything quite like it. Someone went to a lot of work widening the bed on this truck, etc.

If this is factory, excuse me I haven't seen one before.
Typical bumpside in the junkyard. Suprised no one has taken the grill yet.

When this junkyard started, I think this was their tow truck used to move stuff around.

More neat pictures of old iron in junkyards:
