Re: 72 F100 project, longbed to short conv, CV swap, 20s
Thanks! I installed DJM's and flipped the hangers in the back (angled shims too) but I'm really wanting to perform a CV IFS swap and either a 4-link or a T-bird/Mark8 IRS someday...we'll see. I have rust in my bed floor much like what yours had before you patched it up (nice work) and more like it at the bottom of both doors but that too might have to wait a little while longer before I address it.JG F100 wrote:F100Builder, your truck looks really good, I actually like Krylon the best out of all the rattle can brands out there. here are the "needs work" areas...
This door needs to be reskined or replaced

Big rusty gap on top of the cab, not sure if seam sealer will be good enough, I'd hate to weld this one up too

small rust holes

I'd like to find a better hood

Ok we have a definite problem going on when "...I actually like Krylon the best out of all the rattle can brands out there..." is part of the discussion for painting your truck. I am going to have to be the party pooper here. I miss the maroon & white even with the green fenders.
F100Builder doing the CV IFS is a bit of work but when you compare against other options in the same scope probably the easiest. A easily 5" drop achieved picking up rack & pinion steering, 12" rotors, dual piston calipers & handling package. For the most part can be accomplished in a weekend. If you have everything available at the time you start to make it to the end. You know, things like running out of oxygen Sunday afternoon. With the info from JG100, Carcrafter & myself (there are others that have done this as well) you should be able to fab your rear mounts prior to starting, buy what you need to build your column to rack shaft, your brake line adapters. When talking to Dave at truckirs.com he told me he was working on a mount kit for the CV install. He was looking for people to try it out.

No problem here at all party pooper! The Krylon is temporary...I wanted it one color and didn't want to spend a fortune at this time for a 'real' paintjob. Someday, after I finish another project that has been going on a lot longer than my bump, I will paint the '69. I believe, however, that I will be sticking with the satin black as I've really grown to love the look for my truck...it will be done with higher quality paint and shot with a gun though.elgemcdlf wrote:Ok we have a definite problem going on when "...I actually like Krylon the best out of all the rattle can brands out there..." is part of the discussion for painting your truck. I will be searching for a deal on a CV IFS as well as an IRS but I don't want to take it on just yet until I get my '56 back on the road. I installed a Mustang II IFS and a 4-link 9" onto its frame along with fabricating all tubular K-members and boxing the rails (the only original parts left of the frame btw...) so the work doesn't scare me in the slightest...I just don't have the time or room to have two trucks ripped apart and nothing 'fun' to drive in the meantime ('56 is taking up my garage now). I wish I had a big shop!!!
Anyway, I love all of the work being done on these trucks and I will be referencing the pics and asking some questions at a later time I'm sure. Keep up the great work all of you!
My '56 frame...the 9" now has disc brakes on it though.

F100builder that is a nice chassis, good luck on that build too. I always like those trucks. And elgemcdlf no offense taken. I just got tired of the "quilted" look of the truck. Believe me I'm envious when I see the others getting real paint jobs on their projects.

Re: 72 F100 project, longbed to short conv, CV swap, 20s
Thank you! I have done sooo much work on that thing and I think I was getting a little burned out on it. The '69 has let me have a little fun lately since I've kept it driving for the most part during its transformation to what it is now. I'll be getting after the '56 again real soon! Again, keep up the great work on yours!

Re: 72 F100 project, longbed to short conv, CV swap, 20s
Started picking at the bed the seam the other day, it was bad. Stuck a screwdriver in there and used the wire wheel pretty aggressively in there to try and get all the rust out. I even sprayed some phosphoric etch in there to eat away what I couldnt reach. Then wire wheeled some more
Then I started welding it up, some spots were really bad requiring several passes before I got to the outer edge. (Camera phone sucks in low light)
Few days later it was pretty well sealed up, used a flash light to check for pin holes
Then I stripped everything back to bare metal again, good thing it was a only a light coat of rattle can
And today I got around to putting some dynaglass short-strand filler on the seam, it should help keep moisture out. I'll add filler on top to make the bump straight
These dark surface rust spots were stubborn, wish I could have sandblasted them. I used some CLR and phosphoric etch to clean it some more.
Its been a while since I've done body work, we'll see how this side turns out before I do the other side

HE LIVES! I am caught between keeping the seam and filling. Waiting to see how yours comes out with a coat of something on it.

If I didnt have so much rust in the seams I would have preferred to use a good seam sealer and call it a day.

How wide is the original rear end on the F100? How wide is the one from the Crown Vic? Did you have to do a lot of modifications. Does the original drive shaft hook up to the rear end O.K.?

Re: 72 F100 project, longbed to short conv, CV swap, 20s
The original rear is 61.5 from wheel mounting surface to wheel mounting surface, I think the 2007 crown vics are somewhere around 70" wms-wms. I went through two drive-shafts, the first one when I went to short-wheel base and the second one because once lowered it was too long. I used a 8.8 flange style yoke with the explorer rear.Ford Custom Project wrote:How wide is the original rear end on the F100? How wide is the one from the Crown Vic?
