Does she want you to sign the title over to her? The title without your signature isn't going to do her much good. I believe all you have to do is go to the DMV and ask them for a duplicate. Just don't wait until you are in the middle of splitting the sheets.....

Ignoring that I can still see both sides, it is perfectly reasonable for her to want some sort of collateral and it is perfectly reasonable for you not to want to hand over the title to your truck.

Woods gave you the deal, you need to sit down with her and work this out in some way that will be agreeable to you both. You got anything else to offer as collateral?

Pay the $220 and then report that brake shop to the BBB for charging $750 for the brake work. Reminds me of a "Just Brakes" kind of scam. Suck you in with the $99 brake job and then tell you that you need another $800 worth of work on your brakes. I believe I can replace every part on my brake system from m/c to shoes for under $500 and a half a days work. But seriously, being the veteran of 2 divorces I can agree with woods on most of his points. My first wife shafted me out of thousands while we were married and my second wife wheedled me out $20K plus, during our "temporary" separation, BEFORE we divorced. Both my own stupidity. Never again. You never know what somebody's capable of until you divorce them, then all bet's are off!

I try to stay out of other folks problems. BUT........ If you absolutely have to go this route to get your truck out of the shop, any arrangements with her need to be on paper. And notorized if possible. Reciepts are nice to have also. Believe me, I know. I'm on my 4th (and last) marriage
Like woods says, these are only opinions.
Personally, I would leave mine at the shop and try to pay them out before I sign mine over to anyone to hold over my head.

Cajones, grow some. You were married before, do you need a wife/mother? Be independant live on your own without anyone. Never let anyone get the upper hand. Your selling stuff on ebay so you can hustle. If you can make money there fast enough your doing good. If you can't you need to get a better hustle. Sometimes it takes working 20 hours a day (that won't be forever) to get your independance. trust me been there done that. I can hustle the money when I need to, so I know you shoud be able too.
Bottom line is if you can't take care of yourself, what are you doing living with someone? If you let her get your title and she puts you out then what?

Gee, chico, wonder what made you think of that? After my 1st divorce, I lived in my '77 F150 for about 2 weeks till I got paid then moved into a 1 room efficiency apt for $75/wk. Worked my way up to a real apt in about 2 mos. After my 2nd divorce I lived in my '87 Hyundai Excel for about 2 months, then into a friend's popup camper, then a $50/wk dump of a trailer, then a $75/wk dump of a trailer, and so on. Now, on my 3rd marriage, my wife's name is on NOTHING I own and my name's on nothing of hers. She pays her stuff and I support the house and mine. Twice burned, never again! Keep us updated man, we're rootin' for ya! I'm sure we've all got some tips on how to survive after a divorce, or two, or three.

I can't add much that hasn't already been said. No freakin' way would I sign that title over. If she trusts YOU, she'll give you time to pay it back. This has SHADY written all over it.

If you're living with her and it sounds like you're not paying rent, are you employed right now? If you're not, that's not unique, there are a lot of good folks out of work in this economy. But if I were unemployed, I'd be working on finding ANY kind of work ASAP. Even flipping burgers at minimum wage (and I'm sure you could find something better) you could come up with a grand in about a month if you don't have any other expenses, sooner if you worked two jobs.

Oh, and this is a major reason why I have never lived with a girlfriend. Breakups are much easier when you drop a box of her stuff off at her place and say goodbye.

Just do it like a bank would do it.

Have her name put on the title as a lienholder. Have a contract drawn up. You've got a computer and internet access, so you can just download a simple contract and put the names, collateral and dollars in it.

As long as you are making payments as agreed in the contract (KEEP YOUR RECEIPTS), she can't sell it without going through the courts. If she attempts to sell it (and somehow succeeds) without going through the proper channels, you've got a breach of contract suit that will grab her by the short hairs and make her squeal!!

In order, ....plan A) Talk to the shop, tell them the bill was unexpected and ask for time. Go to a temp service and bug them so much they give you some work just to shut you up. Take a cab and go to work everyday, work hard, always be looking for something to do. Make a friend due in large part to your work ethic... a friend who wouldn't mind swinging by and giving you a lift to and from work everyday. Pay your repair bill.

B) If you have to have your truck right now, look into a title loan, your truck is worth a couple of hundred in scrap alone. if you get a title loan,revert to plan "A" and pay off your title.

C) If you have to have your truck right now, go ahead with the option your GF offered, pay her and get a signed receipt everytime. She's covering her bases, she'll understand you doin the same. I'd still look for work. it's easier to make money before you need it than to make it after you need it.

Furthermore, stop thinking bad of your GF for protecting herself, if my daughter loaned a few hundred to a guy with no money and no job and was taken because she didn't cover her bases I would question my raising of her. I'd look at her conditions as intelligent money handling, a no-so-common skill she might someday use in your favor.
If you have good intentions it should not be a problem as long as you cover your bases and get your payment receipts. My finance company holds the title of my new F150, I make payments and I hold reciepts. I still feel like a man.
