Have you ever noticed? Why Bumps Rule...

Post by PhantomoftheBumpside »

Feel free to build this thread with your own observations about Why Bumps Rule...

Have you ever noticed that Bumpsides are so cool that after '72, for several years, those ever popular trim upgrades from base models basically meant you spent extra $$ for trim to fill in that dent with a big chromed BUMP?

My top 3 reasons why bumps rule...nice body style, ease of repair/maintenance, they sold a gazillion and parts trucks are still plentiful here in the NW.
I always wondered, in which U.S. district were the highest sales. Still lots of 'em around in my Seattle neighborhood.

I've always considered 5th generation F series Ford truck's as a transitional vehicle, containing the best of both worlds.

Bumps are the last vehicles produced that are simple to repair and/or maintain, hell for stout, basic in execution, performance oriented or at least performance could be had without breaking any State or Federal smog laws but also 'modern' in appearance plus containing creature comforts such as power steering/brakes and A/C which were typically not found, in any great abundance, in prior year Ford Trucks. Don't get me wrong, I love Slicks and Dents, but I REALLY love Bumps.

When generation 6 F series Ford Trucks were rolled out, emissions were now at the forefront and performance took a back seat. Manufacturers were replacing steel and iron with aluminum and plastic. Systems started becoming more complex and costly...the heart and soul of American vehicles was being ripped out of our collective hands bolt by bolt, fender by fender...

I've owned older (too crude) and newer (NO soul) Ford Trucks, but the siren's call of a Bumpside Ford quietly and sometimes loudly calls to me...I can't image my life without that old, loveable, simple Ford truck waiting for me to drive it down life's highways.

It makes me feel alive...

Consider yourself lucky. Here in my area of Massachusetts, bumpsides are basically unobtainium these days. We have an apparent love affair with road salt here, resulting in most vehicles rotting out from under you.

I can't even imagine how much it would cost to ship one from the west coast to the east coast...

Cost me about $1400 when I did it in May 2010.

That's actually better than I would have expected. Thanks for the info.

I'd love to find a good truck, fly out and drive it back here. Unfortunately, you never know if a rig is reliable until you own it awhile, and that's a long drive in a 40-ish year old truck without an overdrive.
