OT: Custom Built "Shifter Kart"- Frame in the Works

Post by evan_flatt69 »

Sorry if this is off topic.

A friend and I formulated a plan to create a go-kart from scratch. Our plan is to use 11ga 1.25"x1.75" rectangular steel tubing to create about a 6' long and 3' wide frame, mount on a 200cc-400cc dirtbike/atv engine and transmission and achieve a speed or around 60mph. Sounds crazy right??

I've attached some basic drawing as 3D designs that I made in engineering class (been working on them and several other designs and stress analysis for a month or 2) that we will be going off of for this build. Hopefully monday we are making a run to a atv salvage yard and hope to come back with a good engine. And within a week or 2 we should have the steel tubing ordered. And this will all be made possible by/at my friend's dad's tool and die shop which we wouldn't be able to do without. He's also supplying us with the steel :D

My main idea in posting this was to see if anyone had any past experience, ideas, or incouragement. :fr:

Sounds cool. Here is mine. Goes as fast as my Flintstone feet can move.

Thought about puttin a ninja or cbr motor and gearbox in one and setting up an e brake so i could drift it....

or, mount a 4cyl and trans in the middle, next to the driver. weld or lock the diff in the fwd trans and run the axles out to two small diffs and build a 4 wheel indipendant suspension system and make it go FAST over bumps, essentially a mini trophy truck...err cart.

A shifter kart doesn't need as much motor as you might think. We had a Kawasaki 80 2 stroke and a Yamaha 125 4 stroke. The little Kawi was very fast.

That would be our dream machine but it's just a bad accident waiting to happen and of course it would be crazy expensive lol.

Nice start with the CAD drawing, (I'd say that's half the battle-if you know the design specs will work)? Have you put the drawing up against a few other carts? Always wanted to learn CAD / have a program here / too stubborn to try it LOL!

I had a few pictures of actual racing karts parts and frames up while I was designing it to get that basic idea blended in with what my friend and I had already sketched up and had in mind. The biggest differences between our design and a racing kart it simplicity and it's longer.

As far as CAD and inventor goes its fairly easy but takes some time to become proficient at. When we started out on AutoCAD, after 18 weeks of drawing 3 views and isometrics on paper with a drafting table with some tools, a pencil, and erasers, we were amazed at how quickly you could draw something that would normally take us an hour. But once we got into Inventor I was amazed. I love making things into a solid 3D object. You can do some pretty amazing things on these programs- I just figured out how to simulate putting force onto objects and seeing where the stress points are and how much it will bend.

I have plans for a Piranha cart that uses a 600cc sportbike motor. Have some of the parts made and a 1999 Yamaha R6 motor sitting on my bench in the garage. Just need the time to finish the chasis. Also have a ZX11 motor if I am truly brave. Here is a link to the plans http://www.edge.au.com/Categories/Piranha They have some other pretty cool plans on there.

I can't imagine having the power of a sport bike motor on something like that. Sounds like a blast.

Thanks for the post of this thread. You have renewed my interest in my build and I just remembered that my brother-in-law has a CNC plasma cutter that I could use to cut out most of this very easily. I have to talk to him next weekend to get back on this. Thanks. 8) :D

Got an Engine donor! A 1984 Honda 200cc 3-Wheeler. Runs good, has 5 gears (no clutch), and is a 4-stroke. It set us back 300$ which I don't think was too bad considering it runs and drives, looks decent, and the only real problem is it has a flat tire. But we drove around a little it anyway  . The fuel bowl on the carburetor has a little threaded plug and o-ring that leaks a little but hopefully a new o-ring will solve that problem.

:woohoo:
