Rotten Grouch
AKA my Father. just had a pretty severe heat attack last night (most likely on purpose just to mess with me). Since no one else will keep an eye on him for a few days, it looks like it's up to me. I will no doubt return with some sort of a nervous twitch from being yelled at and called stupid on an hourly basis. Anyway...I'm loading up some stuff and will be off within the hour.
If any of you have a Father like mine, you will appreciate the dread I am currently feeling. So...wish me luck, I'm off to battle.

Sadly there is NO preparation for dealing with a super critical parent of either gender. You carry the wounds for your entire life. Best you can do is NOT treat your kids the same way...using what you've experienced to teach yourself what NOT to do to your kids.
On a more positive note, I hope and pray that your Dad is on the mend.
Also I DO believe that people like your Dad are aware of their short comings and during the times that they are alone with their own thoughts they wish and pray that they could change but their demons are far too over powering. Makes you wonder how your Dad was treated/brought up by his folks? Poor tortured soul that he is...Yup, I DO feel sympathy for YOU and your Dad.

I wish Papa Woods a speedy recovery and our Woods strength in the face of obvious misery. Yep, I understand completely- pretty sure our dads are brothers.

A BIG AMEN TO THIS! You don't know what you have till it's gone kinda thing - AND - it just may be that his "grouching" is helping to make you a better man - sometimes there's a hidden reason for how your parents treat you. Take a look in the mirror and be sure you're not one of those "reasons".guerra wrote:I wish My dad was here so he could yell at me!! Sorry to hear about your dad. Maybe this will be a life changing event for him and he'll ease up a bit on the criticism and possibly even apprieciate you coming to help him out. Hope you both get through it safe, sound, and sane.

Re: Rotten Grouch
Woods, is that a heart attack or heat attack? I had a heart attack 6 weeks ago and i was given all kinds of good stuff that i didn't know what was real and what wasn't. I also had my ticker rebuilt too while at the hospital. But for a heart attack he should have some pills that just make him the happyest person you ever want to meet, and the only bad words coming from him is its time for another pill. If you can get along with him now i don't think you ever will because he should be so doped up that he just don't care about much.

I hope a speedy and as full a recovery as is possible!
If he's still grouchy, maybe that's a good sign.
Be strong and patient, I hope all of you get through this okay!

Re: Rotten Grouch
I hear ya. I ended up with a couple decent retirements and still working a job. Didn't matter my father called me a failure and a lot of other things until he passed 4 years back. I would do anything for him, just as you are doing for your's. He was just a mean SOB, but he was dad and I loved him.
I sure do not miss the way he was, and the way he treated family. Nice to others, but he treated family bad.
God bless you and your dad. You will never regret being there for him.
John
