Need guidance on purchasing my first Ford truck

Post by kaliona »

Hello all. Newbie here planning on buying a 1967 F100 to fill my now void time after completing my 1967 Mustang project. Have always wanted an old Ford truck, 67 to 72, but need guidance on what I should expect to pay for one that is in running condition. I found a '67 with a C4 tranny and an FE352. According to the ad, No major rust or dents. Don't know yet if its a short bed or long bed. Heater doesn't work but seller says it runs "good". I don't know how many miles on it or how "good" it actually runs. The guy wants $1400. Also, I thought the C4 was better suited for a small block. Shouldn't it have a C6 in it?

I had fun restoring the Mustang and hope to have as much fun with whatever truck I end up purchasing. Looks like a wealth of knowledge on this site and forums so I want to make sure I start off on the right foot and not pay too much initially for this truck. Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Dependent on your location, supply and demand. I've gotten Bumps for as little as $200.00 here in SoCal. Not fair, it is what it is...

It SHOULD have an MX, aluminum bell housing w/ cast iron trans body ('67 ONLY deal). PO may have upgraded to a C6. All aluminum, one piece, housing.

Sounds like you're experienced so you're well on your way to enjoying your Bump!

Welcome aboard. :wel: For me I had to go down to Virgiania for mine. The only thing I will say is these trucks are like a drug, you will get hooked and bad.   If my wife hears one more stroy about what I did to my bump she will divorce me. At least there is this forum for me to my needs satisfied. :D :D

Well, since you asked, and since I'm proud I was able to do this never having rebuilt an engine before and did it only with Tom Monroe's "How to Rebuild a Small Block Ford". Here's a before and after pic of the the '67 Mustang engine, and one shot of the body.

I had fun with this Ford car that's why I'm now looking forward to working on a Ford truck.

Does that mean there's something "special" about 67s?
BTW I just found out its a long bed and has 79,000 miles on it and the seller is pretty sure it's turned over. So 179,000 miles on the original engine and transmission (as far as the seller knows). Is this truck still worth what he's asking....$1400?

1967 is the first year for Bumps... it is also a "one year only" truck, as many parts along with the dash changed for 1968. The radio is different (smaller than 68-up), the doors are different inside, door panels and handles are different, the hood support structure is different, the cab emblems are different, and the list goes on....

So... 1967 is a special year for Bumps. Then again... 1967 is THE YEAR for just about every make/model out there. The exceptions being first years of production or models that didn't exist in 1967. Just check pricing. Yeah.. the old car guides lump all bumps together... but look at pricing on other stuff... 1967's bring more money unless it's for something extremely rare or for a first year other than 67.

67 was a "transition year" or "last year" or "best year" for just about everything... at least that's the way I see it.

Chevy trucks... transition year... Corvette... the LAST STING RAY... Porsche? Only year for 911R, first year for 4 wheel vented discs on the 911S, last year for 911S (until 69), first year for 911T... while VW Beetle got a complete new just about everything... the only exception to my '67 rule might be the Barracuda... they got the body right in 67, but didn't shove a 426 into it until 69...

Oh yeah...and 1967 was the last year that we were relatively free from "really intrusive" Federal Safety Standards... Seat belts were the first thing on the list in 1967, everything else started raining down starting 1Jan68. http://www.nhtsa.gov/cars/rules/import/fmvss/index.html

Oh yeah... 1967 Mustangs.... Don't you love the new body lines and that new dashboard that didn't come from a Falcon? How about that new fastback roofline? Shelby GT350 HiPo 289's with HiRise COBRA intakes and the brand new for '67 GT500's with 428PI's, and yeah... I'd take either one over a '68 GT500KR.

Got some pics of the truck I'm thinking about purchasing. The body is straight but lots of surface rust (even under bed) and flaking paint. Big hole in muffler, weatherstripping around front windshield and rear window cracking with gaps, transmission and bottom of engine covered in fluid (hopefully only from pan gaskets). Put a vacuum gauge on it and it held steady at about 20 inches. It won't be my daily driver. Just want it as a work truck around town. It's running, and I'm sure a good tune up will make it run even better. Is this truck in this condition worth $1400?

Last I time I checked a couple of months ago... in condition 5, bumps were worth about $2200 + 10% for V8, and as I mentioned earlier 67's are usually a premium over the rest.

The hood on that one is still a '67 and in pretty decent shape. The grill is right and isn't too banged up either. Offer him a $1000 and see if you can get it for $1200... even at $1400 it looks like a good deal to me.

Make sure the badges and small bits like the radio, heater pulls and door hardware are there. as they are one year only, they can get pricey.

Scoop up all the broken bits of valve seal out from under the valve covers, tune it up (looks like they already started with that new cap, wires and coil), and encapsulate all that rust underneath so it doesn't start disappearing on you after you buy it. Worry about the muffler after you start to rebuild it.

Be sure to check the front cab mounts for being rusted out and I would explorer the extent of rust around the upper windshield area and the drip rail right above it.

Looks like a good truck.

Don't let the rust worry you that much... it's fixable.

Just that hood and the emblems on it are worth more than half the asking price already.
