Actually, those numbers on all three trailers match, except capacity... so something is fishy there... looks like the same trailer with 3 different ratings... but... to increase the ratings, you'd have to beef up at least the suspension, if not the beam(s), crossmembers and deck... even if it's just bigger spring packs, they weigh more, so all three capacities can't have the same weight.

That 77 probably weighs a little more than the specs as well, depending on equipment/pkg options, just like most of our bumps seem to be fat compared to their tags...

My worn out 360 will still light up the oversized mud tires through it's sloppy C6 and Dana 60 C8 3.73 rear end, so I don't think that 360's are so gutless you'd have to worry about towing anything, but, yes stopping with old 4 wheel drums could be an issue, if your trailer didn't have it's own brakes.

So.. where are those pics? Is the 'new' 77 an Explorer/Ranger?

I think I am losing my marbles, or at least my memory, I would have sworn I uploaded pictures. Here they are, two of the dent and one of my '98 Ranger. The Ranger went to the college auto shop for repairs and the dent came home, so I had a load both ways.

The dent is a fancy model with more trim than any truck needs. Chrome is in good condition and there is no rust in the body. This thing even has the original blue license plates and screw jack. The bed is really nice (wish it was a bump bed) and has factory tie down hooks and dual tanks. Found the build sheet and the truck is all original. The camper shell is ugly, but it has protected the bed all these years. The tires are trash from sitting in the northern California sun. It is a shame to part this thing out, but with the cost of a set of tires and $734 in back registration fees I can't pencil it out to put it on the road again. Besides, that 460 will look really good in by bump.

I had to tow a car about 70 miles a while back with my 71 F100. I used a tow dolly so that some of the weight was on the car itself. Pulled like a dream even up some nice hills.

I've never paid a previous owner's back fees to transfer/register a vehicle... you should only owe from the date of transfer... or is that just one more thing to add to my reasons to stay away from CA?

Looks like an Explorer XLT.

Yep, it is a Cali thing. The only way to clear the title is if you have a friend who has a wrecking yard and they turn in the plates and junk it and you "buy" if from them and get a salvage title. My F250 has a salvage title for just that very reason. PO did it to clear outstanding fees. The badges on the side of the dent say it is a Ranger XLT F-150. It has more trim than the law should allow. (I don't like trim) :D

Right... sorry Explorer would add that last extra peice of hardware that one doesn't have.. the hood ornament, with Explorer lettering to the back of the bed, with the fat stripes instead of the two tone thing.... some times my old worn out brain runs things together in strange ways... too much milage and a couple of clogged passages can do some damage...

Glad to hear you made the trip and got things home in 1 piece. I am a little surprised you had trouble pulling the hills with your 360. The trailer looks like a skid loader trailer we had at the John Deere dealership I used to work at. Yes, they are dam heavy, but you don't have to worry about tires/floor, etc holding the truck.

On the back fees issue- here in Iowa you have the same problem as California. I spent $400 getting a clear title to an old dent 10 years ago. Wish I still had the truck....

I knew from reading your previous posts that you weren't using U-(don't)-Haul. They don't really want anybody hauling anything on their trailers, unless they also rent you the truck to tow it with!! [/quote]

That is the truth. I gave up trying to rent from them years ago. They wouldn't even rent me a tow dolly to use behind my 71 F100 or a 93 F150 no matter what I was towing on it. Had to rent a truck to pull it with. Wrong!
