anyone else watching the 66 crew on Ebay?

Beautiful body and interior on this thing. I was a bit taken back that the front axle and suspension was 96 dodge stuff, but it's pretty darn cool regardless.

Very nice truck with good attention to detail. I am guessing that they had a donor truck for the diesel and used the front suspension from it. But I think it works finel for that setup. I like the airbags in the rear as well. But it is currently at 35k and has not met reserve. Big money!

I just figured for the $2K those spin-tech front hubs cost he could have bought a couple of real 35 spline HP 60 Ford front ends. Those front axles and steering boxes are a source of many problems for dodge owners.

Former Music City stars truck, (it's in the Nashville area)? Quick somebody find me Alan Jackson's phone number, maybe he'll hire me to drive it down to Georgia.
What's that hiding behind the rear seat, a heater maybe?
Nice truck, thanks for sharing Dustin.

Re: anyone else watching the 66 crew on Ebay?
There are quite a few $60,000 trucks sold everyday that aren't really that great. Lots of people spend that and more paying shops to restore muscle cars. It's all relative.
Atleast the truck looks to really have a 10/10 body. The last few old crew 4x4 Fords I've seen on Ebay were not at all in the same league and went for double what I figured they were worth.

Pretty sweet truck.
I would have them prove to me it's all DOM and not regular HREW before dropping that much money, though. And for that money, I would expect atleast some bilstein 5150's for shocks, not some white rockets...

Dustin, thanks for this thread. I think that truck's stunning; I was amazed to read that the paint's original.
My personal preference would be to have that beautiful truck body used for a true restoration though. I don't really dig the non-Ford stuff.
Ryan, what are DOM and HREW? Some 4x4 drivetrain terms?

I CAN appreciate all of the work and money that's gone into the building of this truck, but it sure would be nicer if it were sitting on a Ford chassis in my opinion. Course I'm more of a purest the older I get

...doesn't look like it sees much off road use either...

I too didn't understand the need for a 'custom' frame. I'm not real impressed with the frame and don't understand why they couldn't put that body on a newer frame and just swap the Cummins under the hood.
Custom usually sounds good but ends up scary.

Re: anyone else watching the 66 crew on Ebay?
It's not original paint, just a nice clean original paint truck that they started with.
What I thought when I saw the pictures was it wasn't some dysfunctional mess of a creation with huge rockstar wheels and a stack with a smoke switch like most high buck conversions seam to be. I'd do it differently, but I can appreciate the work that went into building this one. It's clean and pretty conservative after you look past the frame.

DOM is Drawn Over Mandrel Tubing and ERW is Electric Resistance Welded... HREW is Hot Rolled Electric Welded.robroy wrote:Dustin, thanks for this thread. I think that truck's stunning; I was amazed to read that the paint's original.

The DOM vs the ERW thing... They both have their place. They're both welded tube. The difference is Drawn tube has the weld scarfed off and the material is drawn through a draw die with a mandrel inside to more accurately size the material. You get some gain in Yield and Tensile through grain refinement created in the drawing process but at the cost of about 2-3 times the price per lb. for the material. If accuracy of the O.D. and I.D. and wall thickness aren't a concern in a design then it's a lot less expensive to go with ERW and size it up to suit the load. For example 1026 ERW has a min yield of 45,000 psi whereas 1026 stress relieved DOM will have a minimum yield of 65,000 psi. That means the DOM is 144% the strength of straight ERW.
Many folks confuse DOM with Seamless. They think that because it's so smooth inside and out that it's seamless and not a welded tube. All seamless is just that... seamless or absent of any weld. All DOM is welded. Seamless is also drawn but it starts its life as a piece of solid bar that was pierced then drawn. Wall thickness isn't able to be held as accurately with seamless as DOM but you don't have the inherent risk present with ANY weld. That's why they used seamless for pressure bottles or cylinder etc.. The DOM starts its life as a piece of rolled strip and allows the wall thickness and concentricty to be held very close.

Re: anyone else watching the 66 crew on Ebay?
Edit: Didn't realize i got beaten to it ^^robroy wrote: Ryan, what are DOM and HREW? Some 4x4 drivetrain terms?
Robroy
HREW and DOM are different process in which the steel tubing is made.
HREW is a mild-steel and has a seam running down the tube where it's fused together. The tubing is a little weaker in general and the seam CAN split although i've only heard of it.
DOM has no seam (well, it used to, till it gets "removed") and is much more expensive. Almost all racing organizations are going to require DOM or 4130 chromoly tubing (an even more expensive type of tubing, harder to bend, but some people don't like that because it may crack before it bends in a hard wreck) because it's a stronger and safer tube to be using.
Anyways... when you paint over it all like they did, you really can't tell if it was truly the more expensive and stronger DOM used or if it's HREW hidden under the paint.
Not THAT big of a deal but I'd get a kick out of them trying to prove it's DOM, especially for that price tag
Seems like if you're going to throw cheaper shocks on the truck like they did then they would also figure they may as well use HREW. But maybe I'm getting a little carried away here..
