Before and After 67 Mercury side Emblems

Post by SomersMerc »

Here are a few photos of my side emblems that I took off the truck. I found a bunch of grass and crud plus the '100' plastic inserts were cracked and the paint was worn off. I ordered a new set from LMC Truck and they seem to fit pretty good. I had to use some stereo clips and cut them in half, file them down to replace the old original clips that held the inserts in place. The old ones were rusted out. A lot of elbow grease to bring out the shine and now I just have to touch up the lettering with black paint. Does anyone have a suggestion of what kind of paint will stick to the chrome? I do not want the paint to come off in a car wash.
Thanks

I used flat engine paint. Tape most of the emblem, then just dab some vasolene on the shiny part and spray the letters.

Good suggestion on the flat engine paint. I was thinking I would have to use a very small brush to get in there. Either way should work, as long as it adheres good to the chrome is my main concern.
I will have to give it a try this week.
Thanks!

Could you mask the edges and get in there with a dremel rough polishing pad and scuff it up first?

I did the small dremel tool work already. But thanks for the suggestion. I used a small brass wire tool in the dremel to get in there the best I could. I also used it on the back side to get into the tight corners. It seemed to work pretty good. It managed to take a bit more black paint out of the small grooves in the lettering.

I was thinking of using it to scuff the surface to help the paint mechanically adhere.

I think I'd use some of that krylon or rustoleum all purpose paint.. high heat paint expects that high heat to cure. There is also that chrome paint from duplicolor, wonder if you can just buy the adhesion promoter part of it. I painted some pvc pipe to use as a fork cover on a motorcycle like 2 years ago with the krylon all purpose stuff, 13k miles later and it still looks good. I had considered using some sort of enamel (like appliance enamel) or colored epoxy for doing my own emblems.

All that being said those emblems came out quite nice.

Here's how mine turned out when I did them a couple years ago. No drama with the paint sticking, just make sure you use brake cleaner to get all the oil off the part. I wouldn't scuff the chrome becaise I'm sure it'll show through the paint. The flat paint tone looks correct on the emblems too.

as one person mentioned above - just spray the entire emblem then wipe off the raised area with a paint thinner/kerosene or whatever cleaner you have handy - works fine.
