Stupid and funny mistakes

Post by mybros71 »

I did this today and thought I would share. Anyone notice anything problematic here?

I actually cut through the weld at the offset, installed the flange and re-welded. Looked better than it did before actually. I was still setting the welder up.

'That's just a practice weld'

I was going to ask if you at least checked the alignment and fit before cutting the pipe back off?

BTDT... My personal favorite was rebuilding a VE pump for my buddies '93 Cummins and forgot to tighten the triangle shaped pivot bolts before installing it. I had used a Dremel tool with a chainsaw sharpening stone to nodify the socket to take it apart, then had to drill out a big nut to weld to the outside to put it back together. Not one of the easiest things I've fought with...

Reminds me of the time I finally got the motor for my tractor mower back together and installed. Wouldn't work, my late wife, Vicki, said to me. "Didn't you need that part laying over there?" She had watched me through the whole procedure. We laughed about that a lot over the years. Wasn't all that funny at the time.

Well that was the problem. I tacked it all together and test fit. It fit great. I got excited and just welded 'er up. We were in a hurry to get to the range before it got to late. What's that old saying? Hastes makes...

As far as the "VE" pump; I was with you right up until the "triangle shaped pivot"
At that point I felt like I was having a beer with a couple of brain surgeons and they were tewlling funny stories about brain surgery. :hmm: I just didnt get it! Sounds like a major pain though.

See the little triangle looking bolt behind the shut off lever on the side of the pump? There's one on each side of the pump and the bolt is actually a pin for the unloader lever inside the pump.

Here's a pic of the install and yep, you can't see or even feel the one on the back side...

So is there a new patented pivot pin removal and installation tool on the market?

I have to admit I have left off the very same header flange before myself and it was after It was fully welded before I noticed. lol
How about pulling on some nut with a large pipe wrench because you didn't have a wrench large enough, slipping and knocking yourself almost out with the pipe wrench? Anybody? lol

So I take it you are a long lost member of the Ford family? Nice to meet you. We don't have fancy jackets or shirts like some families, we carry matching first aid kits.
