Renting a place for myself

Post by OldRedFord »

So I decided I needed to be closer then 40 miles away from work. (Thats one way)

I found a trailer for rent real close to work for less then $100 a month. Its been vacant for some time and crackheads had stripped a lot of the wiring out of it. Im completely gutting the inside and starting fresh.

What follows are the pictures of the work over the past two weeks. I spend two hours there after work most days and just keep plugging along.

The first six pictures are of the state of the trailer before starting work.

The rest are of the demo.

First to go were the [censored] cabinets. The cabinets under the sink were made out of 2x4s and plywood. Im moving the [censored] against the 12' wide end wall of the trailer to make better use of the small space. That and in this part of the trailer there are three layers of plywood on the floor. :?

After that I just kept going along ripping down the sheetrock off the walls. Off the living room there was a small 8 x 8 room that had no use to me. One of the walls backed up to the bathtub and this wall was rotten away at the bottom. So I gutted that room and the bathroom. Also in the bathroom the floor under the sink vanity and toilet is totally rotten away. The toilet is half way through the floor.

Im adding about 6' to the bedroom in the back, the bathroom will be bigger and I am creating a actual laundry room. The trailer did have forced air heat but judging by the condition of the floor around the furnace I am betting the insides are shot.

the last four show where I stopped for the weekend. I also decided to save the drywall demo in the bedroom for later. Hopefully there is nothing living in the walls. :D

Some of teh insulation in other parts had remains of acorns in the fiberglass. I think BobbyFords new friend took up residence on the east coast part time. :P

There is also another trailer on the lot that I can strip of anything I need. Then if I want to I can demo it and haull off whatever to the scrap yard, burn the rest.....and I have permission to put up a shop.

The trailer I am working on is small, 11 x 48 but its big enough for one person. Also has a screen porch on the front.

You are a smart and ambitious man! I did a 60 mile one way commute for a few months and understand the frustrations. The gas and time savings will be well worth your efforts. I'll look forward to seeing the finished product.

Materials provided makes it a bit more worth it.

I wish I were your landlord though. Paying ME to fix up my place, and build a shop on it!

I was gonna be negative & say that it sounded cheap until you factor in the value of your own time and labour ......but compared to the time and $$$$ wasted driving 40 mi to work everyday......and the enjoyment that tearing stuff apart and replacing it with better stuff that you're not on the hook for will bring....
- still got my first first car 20+yrs later : 69 f100 sorta kinda pretending its a Mercury M100 w/a 70 f350 sport custom cab (factory buckets) 67 grille with 69 ranger cooneyes 68 merc box and hood, some supercool fiberglass fenders i scored way back when, 76 f150 disc brake frontend..currently running a 90 5.0HO 4bbl/c4 auto & 3.50 posi...originally a 360/c6 f100 Ranger with dealer added towpack (incl. kelsey hays trailer brake),boxside toolbox, behind the seat stowage & belly tank...only original parts left on 'er are the frame, rear end, rear springs, and rear bumper...

I guess I'm just used to commuting.

I live 50+ miles from everything. All my neighbors commute to work. It's all freeway driving though, so it usually works out to be about the same drive time (an hour) as driving across town when there's traffic.

Good work. We once lived in Dodge City, what a pity...as the song goes (I've Been Everywhere, Man...J. Cash) and we had to drive 2.5 hours or thereabouts just to eat at a non fast food restaurant or see a real live mall with stores and everything. 70 miles one way is my limit on commuting.
