Ford stroker engine
So with chevys you can mix and match engine parts to make different engines. such as 283 crank and rods in a 327 to make a 302 or a 400 crank and rods in a 350 to make a 383. Can you do this with fords too? the only engine i know of is the 410 using a 390 block and 428 crank and rods? I think its cool to be able to do that stuff.

Re: Ford stroker engine
Ford did this from the factory. The 360FE found in many Bumpside and Dentside pickups is simply a 390 block with 352 crank and rods.
The 410 is a 360/390 block with 428 crank and rods.
A 406 is almost a 428 with 390 crank and rods.
Supposedly a 427 block with 428 rods has been done. I believe that yields a 448.

My buddy has a 66 Fairlane that he's restoring and the hot rodded 427 he found to put in it was built with 428 rods. He's rebuilding it and he had to have custom pistons made, but the guy forgot about the 428 rods and when he installed them they made contact with the heads. Luckily he was smart enough to spin it over by hand first.MaxKlinger wrote:

Re: Ford stroker engine
Ford is one of the easyest engines to do a stroke on, Since ford came out with the flathead V-8 they have made 50 different cubic inch engines. FE's are great because there are so many combinations you can go with, and all the connecting rods are the same length except for the 352/360. Back in the 60s when chrysler come out with the hemi the ford boys used a 427 block with a 361 FT crank and came up with 396 c.i. that would turn close to 8,000 rpms. You can also use a 428 crank in a 427 and get 454 c.i. I bet the chevy boys love that LOL.

Re: Ford stroker engine
not to mention that the FE's have a pretty thick cylinder wall, the 360\390's will usually support .060 over if you really wanted to get ridiculous with it.

does the 428 rods give it a better rod ratio?fomocoguy wrote:My buddy has a 66 Fairlane that he's restoring and the hot rodded 427 he found to put in it was built with 428 rods. I have no idea, I just know it gives more cubic inches.caseyj10 wrote:does the 428 rods give it a better rod ratio?fomocoguy wrote:My buddy has a 66 Fairlane that he's restoring and the hot rodded 427 he found to put in it was built with 428 rods. I thought Displacement was based of bore and strock?fomocoguy wrote: I have no idea, I just know it gives more cubic inches.

Re: Ford stroker engine
It is; but I made a mistake and I need to clarify. It's not the rods that are different between the two, it's the crank. The 428 crank yields a 3.98" stroke, whereas the 427 has a 3.78" stroke. The have the same length rods. My buddies motor is a 427 with a 428 crank, hence the custom pistons. Here's a great source of FE info: http://www.mercurystuff.com/fe-engine-specs.htmlcaseyj10 wrote:I thought Displacement was based of bore and strock?fomocoguy wrote: I have no idea, I just know it gives more cubic inches.

Re: Ford stroker engine
You can also take the 302 out to 427 with 400 crank and 300 rods and .040 overbore or i believe a 351w out to the 450 ci area if i remember the combo right

Re: Ford stroker engine
I was going to ask about the 400 crank in a 351. you cant use a 400 crank in a 302 because of the main journal size. 302=2.25 400=3. i read the 400 crank in the 351 was the origial 408. what rods would you use for that stroker?cookmatt67 wrote:You can also take the 302 out to 427 with 400 crank and 300 rods and .040 overbore or i believe a 351w out to the 450 ci area if i remember the combo right

Re: Ford stroker engine
the snout of the 400 crank gets turned down to match the 302, and the rods are from a 300 I-6. this was written up by hotrod some time back i'll dig around and see if i can find the issue

Please do. that would be cool if it worked.cookmatt67 wrote:the snout of the 400 crank gets turned down to match the 302, and the rods are from a 300 I-6. this was written up by hotrod some time back i'll dig around and see if i can find the issue

Re: Ford stroker engine
k looks like my memory was a little off, the article is from 1992, the 302 block can be taken to 347 and the 351w block can be taken to 440ci using the 400 crank
the only reason i kept the issue was the thought of a 427 badged small block mavrick grabber that i have had in the back of my head for many years.. heres the breakdown on the 351/400 combo
408 .030 overbore 4.0 stroke 6.580 rod length
415 .060 overbore 4.0 stroke 6.580 rod length
423 .100 overbore 4.0 stroke 6.580 rod length (uses svo block or sleeved production block)
427 .125 overbore 4.0 stroke 6.580 rod length " " " " " "
440 .125 overbore 4.125 stroke 6.209 rod length
the mag is superford's "hot engine special" from 1992
