'72 f100 (Worth it)?

Post by scott72 »

New to forum. =)

You guys think this is worth it? Needs PS rebuilt, and has some rust. Also needs new tires to drive it home.

It depends on where you are, how plentiful bumps are, and are you near the truck?

Personally, the only thing that makes it worth the price to me is the supposed work in the engine. I'd want to see a build sheet and find out exactly how many years and miles ago the work was done.

Again, personally, I probably would pass on it. Too many things wrong and there's too many other trucks around here (Portland, Oregon) that you can find for a decent price. I certainly wouldn't give more than what the starting bid is.

But I know we're spoiled out here for classic trucks.

Here's an example of one on craigslist right now that you could probably get for $900 or $1000.

And a few others:

Like anything else though, pictures and descriptions are useless. You pretty much have to go look for it yourself. Often what's in the picture bears very little resemblance to what you find in person.

----- Edit --------

Oops, for some reason I was looking at 2WD comparisons.. the 4x4 will bump the price a little, so it may be worth it after all for the ebay, but still not too hard to find. I sold my '67 F250 4x4 for $1,000 with an extra and completely perfect ranger box. The overall truck was in a bit rougher shape though.

Its about a 4 1/2 hour drive from me.

He said 30k on rebuild, but that is just what he said.

Yeah, I wish there were more of these in colorado, seems like a ton on ebay around washington.

I don't know, it's probably worth $1500 in parts and scrap out the truck. Every panel is dented or rusted, needs glass. The engine's highlight was a chrome air cleaner and valve covers and a whopping $600 in machine work. The floors look decent since there's no carpet. Cab mounts maybe but it's hard to tell from the pictures.

For a rebuild, if you have a nice 2wd truck this might be a decent frame to put that body on. Maybe...

The hood looked pretty nice. I wonder how much they charged him for the custom braided spark plug wires?

Shoot, find out how much it would cost you to get a F250 picked up and hauled from 98390.... I know where a bump or three might be hidin'...

It always concerns me when I see something like this with minimal photos.

IF the frame and cab are decent and match I'd pay that for it. It is an F100 4x4 which is comparatively rare vs an F250 4x4. I almost never see a 4x4 bump of any description.

I'm getting to where I don't trust anyone's word, compression test and/or receipts. "It ran great when pulled" = core for rebuilding.

I'd buy it just to see how the spark is getting to the plugs! Seriously though the real question is, is it worth it to you? Are you ready willing and able to put the time, money and effort into a project of that sort? The purchase price will long be forgotten, and you'll still be working on your truck. Be honest with yourself and you'll find the right answer.

Thanks guys, you are probably right. Think I'll pass and wait for a better one to come along.

Plus, I have a 72 c10 2wd I have too much into already.
