That would be awesome! Once I get her installed I'd be honored to put a story together for you. It shouldn't take me too long; I'm anxious to get it in!Manny wrote: That is one good thing about fords the distributer being out in front of the carb. One thing is for sure now that after putting efi manifolds on my bro's 300 i will never suggest headers on one to anybody. The manifolds are the way to go. You get it in need to get a story together on the big crew big six it will be a good one for pages.... That is a sharp looking 300 for sure!!!

Re: 69 crew highboy UPDATE: 300 six build done and ALIVE!
Well, I spent about 6 hours yesterday taking her apart. Being my first time taking a big 4x4 like this apart I had a few hang ups, but I finally got it! I was going to take the engine and trans out together, thinking it would be easier, but had I known what a pain it would be I would have just pulled the four bolts from the bellhousing-trans connection and been done with it. After fighting with the front crossmember for an hour that's what I decided to do and things went smoothly after that! Only had to cut one bolt (left side core support mounting bolt). Now I'm going to take my time putting it back together and making it all look nice.

Re: 69 crew highboy UPDATE: 300 six build done and ALIVE!
Well, I've been working on the truck when I can. Getting the engine in was a royal pain, but after about 5 hours of messing with it I got her in. After trying unsuccessfully to put the engine in with bellhousing intact I swapped the bellhousing and throwout bearing over to the trans, then with the help of a come-a-long was able to pull it all together. The other day I bolted the engine, trans, driveshaft, and crossmembers back in place. Today while my 2 yr old daughter napped I managed to fab up my entire exhaust system. I cut the factory efi y pipe right where the y is and went from there with a single 3" pipe back to a Thrush muffler like the one from my video, just 3" instead of 2.25". Welded it all and fabbed a turn down just before the axle.
Now I have to fab a throttle cable bracket, install said cable, convert wiring for the duraspark, install new bushings and clutch pivot assembly, install 3g alternator from old engine, install clutch fan, make a set of custom radiator hoses since I have a V8 radiator, and repair my shifter "collar" that holds the shifter in. I think that's it....
Edit: oh yeah and figure out my power steering pump assembly and hose hook up

Nope plus I forgot the starter, hammering out one of the core support bolts that I had to cut, finishing the detailing, and front end reassembly. So, 45 minutes of work.

Re: 69 crew highboy UPDATE: 300 install coming along
Did a little of everything sunday. Installed alternator, ps pump bracket, temp sensor, oil pressure line, engine ground, starter solenoid and wiring. Did a lot of figuring and planning. I think I've got a solution for everything. Instead of adding a ballast resistor for the coil I decided to just get a 3 ohm Flamethrower from pertronix, so it's on the way. I'm going to have to have some custom ps hoses made, and I have to make some reducers to fit the 1.75" water neck to the 2" spout on the radiator. Water pump inlet is 2", so I just need to make a coupling and find some universal hoses to get it to the opposite side. Clutch pivot is at the old house, so a trip there some evening this week is in order. I picked up the proper Lokar cable, bracket, and return springs, so now I just need to fab a bracket to hold the cable where it attaches to the pedal. Duraspark wiring is as good as figured out. New core support bushings are here.
See, a plan for everything. I can see the light at the end, albeit dim.

Re: 69 crew highboy UPDATE: 300 install coming along
Managed to fab a throttle cable bracket and install my Lokar cable and carb bracket/return spring. What's nice is that with the Lokar cable I was able to keep my V8 gas pedal assembly. Once I do a few more custom pieces for getting stuff hooked up I'll shoot some pics. I think I can make an adapter for the high pressure steering line with basic fittings and a short piece of hard line. Got my rad hoses figured out too, just need to buy the parts.
This is where I want to give props to Lokar. The stuff isn't real cheap, but it is VERY high quality and was VERY easy to install. They have a customer for life.

Re: 69 crew highboy UPDATE: 300 install coming along
Ordered my ps hose fittings today. They just need to get them from a different part of town so they'll be here tomorrow. The bigger news is that my Pertronix coil showed today and I went ahead and wired in the duraspark. She fired off on the first try! I only ran it for about 20 seconds since the rad is still out but it's one more hurtle out of the way.

Re: 69 crew highboy UPDATE: 300 install coming along
Chased down my clutch pivot, ps fittings, and rad hoses today. I got the ps all installed along with running all the fuel, brake, and vacuum hoses, and got the air cleaner on. Also installed the z-bar with new felt washers, bushings, circlips, and the fan clutch. Next step is installing the core support. I have to go get some fender washers so I can replace the ones that were originally stacked on it (they're too small to fit the new bolts that came with the new bushings). Getting perilously close to a test drive...

Re: 69 crew highboy UPDATE: 300 install coming along
Actually it's all done and I've been fine tuning/ test driving for about two weeks now. She's running good and things are getting close, but I still need to dial in the Edelbrock carb and figure out why I'm puking antifreeze out my overflow tube. I bought an Edelbrock calibration kit that comes with metering rods, jets, step up springs, ect that will be here in a few days. Carbs are NOT set up for 6 cyl builds from the factory, that's for sure. It's very rich right now. I'll be installing a 180 stat (195 is in it now) and that should help with the coolant pressure problem. A new quality cap made no difference.
There will be a post to come with all my trials and tribulations thus far. I've been working a lot and in the garage when I have free time, but not much extra time for anything else.

Re: 69 crew highboy UPDATE: 300 install coming along
When I embarked on this journey I think I under estimated the amount of time and work it takes to get a complete engine swap done and fine tuned. It has been daunting, partially since I had some problems that were hard to pin point and partially because I can't leave something alone until it's just the way I want it.
After making adapters for the ps lines, lengthening the clutch push rod, building a wire harness, making new rad hoses, building a throttle linkage, fabbing exhaust, reassembling the front end, and a few other things I'm sure I'm forgetting I was ready to fire her up. She fired off just fine, with one issue. With 3" pipe and the Thrush welded muffler, she was GODAWFUL loud.
After a short test drive she was running great until I pulled back in my driveway. It began to cough and miss, getting progressively worse until it wouldn't even idle.
SO, long story short after re-adjusting the valves, gapping the plugs, installing a new spark box, changing coils, swapping carbs, and hours of scratching my head I decided to change the pickup in my brand new distributor from rock auto as a last ditch effort. It worked.
Now I am dialing in the curve on my dizzy, and once that's done I'll dial in the carb. The dizzy is only advancing 14 degrees by 2800 rpms and I want about 25, so I'm going to pick up some Mr Gasket 925d springs today and give that a try.
Last I still need to figure out why I'm running about 210 degrees and losing antifreeze through the cap even though I've got a 180 stat. I'm beginning to suspect the water pump.
Oh yeah, and through it all I've changed the exhaust so that it's finally the way I want it, with a turbo muffler and a side exit tail pipe. Much more civil and I'm sure the neighbors appreciate it.

Re: 69 crew highboy UPDATE: 300 install coming along
So earlier I went and got my advance springs and after reading up on their use went ahead and replaced the stiffer step up spring with one of the Mr Gasket lighter springs. I checked it afterward and I got EXACTLY 26 degrees of mechanical advance at 3000 rpm! Add in 9 degrees of initial and 15 degrees of vacuum advance and I'm right at 50 total, which was my goal. With my tight quench it should be perfect. I went around the block and it's pulling rpms MUCH faster and going higher than before. It was feeling like you were forcing it to hit 3500 rpms, but now it's begging for more. Tonight when the wifey gets home from work and she can watch the 2-year old I'm gonna go for a nice test drive. I also leaned out the Edelbrock a bit so I'm anxious to see where my a/f ratio is.

Re: 69 crew highboy UPDATE: 300 install coming along
Just went on a test drive and I'm happy to say that the more I dial it in the better she runs, that's for sure. Getting the timing where I wanted it made a big difference. I'm still too rich though, so I need to bring it down another stage on the chart that comes with the carb. If I give her too much throttle at too low an rpm in 3rd or 4th gear it drops to about 10:1 a/f ratio and I can tell it's way to rich. I think one step leaner and maybe a different step up spring should do the trick.
