1969 Optional Fuel Tank (s)
I was looking at '69 Ranger today and it had 2 metal square boxes on each side of the bed behind the cab for fuel and one behind the seat. It also had a switch on the floor next to the drivers door to go between tanks. Are these optional fuel tanks from Ford or something someone added at a later date?

It they were outside the frame and had metal doors covering the filler necks, or were filled inside the fender well, they were after market or dealer installed. If they were inside the frame and had a sheet metal cover to protect them, they were probably factory. However, I don't think the factory installed three tanks, just two, which left room for the exhaust on the passenger's side. You will probably get more response on this that can clarify about the passenger's side tanks.

Both of these I'd say are inside the frame. They doors are plush with the sides of the truck. When you unlock the door, the cap is inside. Both doors are located in the same spot on each side.

My Camper Special has the aux Ford tank on the driver's side, and an aftermarket tank on the passenger side. I haven't plumbed them back into the system yet. I think the passenger tank is only about 10 gallons or so, but I figured it's easier/cheaper to get it hooked up than it is to have the panel filled in and flattened out by a body shop. Besides, you don't see too many trucks with the aftermarket tanks, so it's kind of a discussion piece. Also, the aluminum door is flush with the body, and the filler neck is behind the door. On the Ford tank, the neck sticks out past the body, and there is no door.

My '68 is set up like that, in cab tank and one on either side of the bed with flush aluminum doors.

My '69 has the behind seat storage so it has the inside frame mounted tank with a skid plate to protect it and a regular filler neck and cap that come
through the side of the bed. Inside the bed is a factory formed piece of sheetmetal to protect the filler neck. It also has an add-on tank on the passenger
side that is outside the frame and it also uses a standard style filler neck and gas cap that come through the bedside and it has a small piece of sheetmetal
in the bed to protect the filler neck. Not much room under there for an exhaust system!!
