Windshield mirror adhesive?
Who has had any kind of good luck glueing mirrors on glass?
I just went through the install using the Permatex Extreme adhesive with the activator and the mount came off with the tape after setting up up for a couple hours...

Re: Windshield mirror adhesive?
Can't remember the name of it,but I got it at walmart. It was a two part glue with activator also.It said it was for rear view mirrors. I glued the mount on and taped it down and left it for 24 hrs before removing tape and mounting mirror on it. It has been on for over 3 yrs and is still holding good.Just can't remember the name, but it was the only one walmart had at the time. Hope this helps.

I've had good luck with the instant glue in the small tubes. Just make sure you have all the old stuff off both the windshield and the mount.

Re: Windshield mirror adhesive?
I retried it last night with some permabond instant adhesive and it held for about 1.03 nanoseconds when I tried it this morning. I may end up just taking it to a glass shop since my Mustang has been mirrorless for the last three years.

Re: Windshield mirror adhesive?
The little locktite/permatex kits have always worked fine for me.

Cleaning the glass according to directions is the key. If you don't it won't stick.

Re: Windshield mirror adhesive?
I tried the 3m adhesive on my sisters camaros mirror but it just fell off after holding it forever. So I walked inside and grabbed some gorilla glue and used it. Worked perfectly.

Re: Windshield mirror adhesive?
i've used the mirror adhesive stuff a few times before- it has lasted anywhere from .03 seconds to about 3 months before the mirror took a dive to the floor
i usually use a cheap 2 part epoxy that comes in a big double barreled syringe (can't remember the name right now and i used the last syringe up gluing the headstock back onto a guitar last week - but i'm heading to the hardware store today so i'll check and see who makes it) ,it works great
i've found that the most important part of the whole procedure -other than having the mount taped securely in the right place and exercising patience until the epoxy has actually cured - is to scratch the window up with some coarse sandpaper so there's something for the glue to hang on too

Re: Windshield mirror adhesive?
I had a new windsheild put in my 70 and I had to get a new mirror for it. I think the new mirror came with its own glue for the wedge mount. I cleaned the glass and stuck it on there and haven't had a problem since.

Re: Windshield mirror adhesive?
Dumb question I know, but are you putting the mirror up right away or just the mounting tab? Ive always put a small piece of masking tape on the outside marking where the tab goes, used the permatex kit to mount the tab, taped it with masking tape overnight then mounted the mirror to it the next day....never had an issue. I'm trying to figure out how to get the original tab off of my 68 windshield without breaking the glass......any suggestions there?

Re: Windshield mirror adhesive?
Yep, just using the tab and I use electrical tape since it'll hold tension vs. just hold.

Re: Windshield mirror adhesive?
The two part permatex works fine. No tape or anything... you need to hold it there for a minute. You clean with a razor... wipe with naptha or the like. crack the little tube with a sponge end on it and give it a squeeze so the sponge of activator gets wet. Rub it where your gonna stick it on the window. One good drop of glue on the wedge. Hold it still on the window for a minute and let it go. I wait a few hours (or just overnight) before mounting the mirror. My big old bloodhound had knocked the thing off a couple times but the one time it broke the glass. Since then I switched to the 67 style mirror that's smaller but bolts up to the steel and acts as the visor hanger. Gotta pull the screws out to bring that one down...!
