So in that truck you traveled 49 miles on 4-5 gallons of gas...do the math, that's 10-12 mpg...right in the ballpark...about what you can expect to best you can expect.

I took a 1400 mile road trip when I first overhauled my 71 360 4WD. I didn't know at the time that my vacuum advance diaphragm had a hole in it so, with no vacuum advance, the best I got was just under 12 mpg. That's with points and timing set at 6 degrees BTDC. Since then I've put a new vacuum advance canister on, installed electronic ignition and set the timing at 10 degrees BTDC. I haven't taken a road trip with the new setup so I don't know if the mileage has improved.

There are a lot of variables that can affect your fuel economy. But 10-12 as an average is a pretty good number. Higher numbers ARE achievable. I got an honest 19mpg once with my '72. Highway running is usually 15+ mpg for me, and city driving a deplorable 7mpg.
