scored a 350

Post by hedz »

friend of mine just hooked me up with a good quality chevy 350 4 bolt main with cast crank and rods for $200 that needs the crank balanced and the block cleaned up at a machine shop.

the montes current engine a 305 has a blown head gasket, and although it seems to run well it is slowly dying which is why i've considered this

i think i'm going to rebuild the 305 in one of my montes and use the 4 barrel intake, quadrajet setup on the top end and possibly the heads and transplant them on top of this 350. i hope the heads are decent. if the combustion chambers have a crappy shape to them(305s are notorious for breathing issues, often a problem with the heads with their exhaust port and a lack of space on the side of half the valves to allow a efficient detonation) i'll find a pair of cheap vortecs or maybe go with some fully built world heads which seem to be really cheap. this will be a very mild hydraulic roller built for mpgs, not power. already priced everything. should be under 1500 to build the whole shabang. :D

if 305 heads are ported around the sides that are choking the valves, where only one valve has space around the entire valve to detonate, porting the chunk of metal that comes right up to the valve and smooth it out so that both valves have space i've read that they can be effective, and from there heavy porting in the exhaust and so on. i'm not sure if all 305 heads are like this.

that seems like alot of work when you can just buy a good set of used heads for near nothing. you can find vortecs all day at swap meets for 50 bucks.

:yt: :2cents: Wonder what it would take to pu t a 350 in a bump. Just curious, I know all the hard core guys are going to crusify me but has anybody done this. Used to have a friend that had one in a 60's F100.

:hn: Never put a Chevy in a Ford, that's some real oil and vinegar stuff there, but I did put a 1970 350 Oldsmobile Rocket with a Turbo 400 in a dent side years ago. Had both just sitting there and a friend talked me into putting it in. Made up some motor mounts, used the transmission cross-member out of the car and installed it in the truck, seems to me the worst of it was the radiator hoses, as everything was in the wrong place and I ended up with a goofy looking arrangement to say the least. 4:11 gears, Edelbrock intake, Thermoquad off a Dodge Magnum, a W30 455 camshaft, transpack shift kit and 2 1/2 inch duals to the rear. Even at that, most of the power gained was from meticulous tuning and re-tuning of the carburetor and distributor. What she lacked in purdy she made up for in the GO department, as she beat car after car and made some owners of nice shiny cars wonder how an old ratty looking F250 just cost them $100. Glad I don't do such silly things any more. Not sure if I made as much as the tickets cost me, and was the only vehicle I've had that the State Patrol do an on the spot vehicle inspection to.

About 15yrs ago friend of mine shoved a 2bbl 350 (or so he claimed- it looked alot like an ancient 283 to me ) and th350 into his 68 f350 farm truck(which he then called his "f350 chevy" and thought it was funnier than it looked),flat out nastiest looking swap ive ever seen, and i've seen and been involved in more than my share of them .

It ran ok,but he did a real hack job building frame stands for the engine mounts , the distributor was ridiculously hard to get at and the engine sat way too high, however:
The center dump "ramshorn' exhaust manifolds along with the extra clearance due to the mickey mouse engine mounts made it really easy to fab up a real simple dual exhaust
he ended up using "universal" flexible rad hoses - i believe that he used the stock rad
since the f350 was originally a 4spd he ran a crappy old B&M prostick shifter screwed to an old plywood box that was bolted to the floor in front of the seat
The truck had manual drums and armstrong steering so he didn't have to fool around too much with anything else other than getting his driveshaft shortened abit and doing some alternator wiring

sadly this marvel of automotive engineering is longer with us .
about 8yrs ago when the rusty old cabmounts finally collapsed, the cab ended up beating the chev's distributor into submission, and off she went to the crushpile....
- still got my first first car 20+yrs later : 69 f100 sorta kinda pretending its a Mercury M100 w/a 70 f350 sport custom cab (factory buckets) 67 grille with 69 ranger cooneyes 68 merc box and hood, some supercool fiberglass fenders i scored way back when, 76 f150 disc brake frontend..currently running a 90 5.0HO 4bbl/c4 auto & 3.50 posi...originally a 360/c6 f100 Ranger with dealer added towpack (incl. kelsey hays trailer brake),boxside toolbox, behind the seat stowage & belly tank...only original parts left on 'er are the frame, rear end, rear springs, and rear bumper...
