FE for $150.00

Post by hotrod ford »

Went and looked at an FE w/C6 attached today. All complete except for carb. Dates are 75' for block and intake. The intake is a 4bbl cast iron and the block has reversed 501 stamp. Could this be a 390? I know you are suppoded to check stroke but had no tools to do so. It came out of a 75 3/4 ton. I never heard of a 360 with a cast iron 4bbl.

Sounds like it would be a 390 to me. Cant remember which year they discontinued the 360 in trucks but 75 seems like it would be a 390 to me. I grabbed the 4BBL intake...heads...and exhaust manifolds for my 360 off of a 75 390.

Good day Hotrod Ford,

One easy (sometimes) way to determine whether it's a 360 or not is to look at its crankshaft flange, where the flex-plate normally bolts up. If you're already going to remove the transmission it'll be easy to look there.

360 crankshaft flanges have a half-moon shape cut out of them. 390 crankshafts do not; they merely have a square notch cut out.

This photo shows a 390 crankshaft flange, featuring only that square notch. It's visible in the lower-right area.

Of course measuring the bore and stroke's the guaranteed deterministic way to know exactly what you have, but if you've exposed the crankshaft flange, this way's probably a lot easier.

The reversed "Mirror" 501 stamp just means it's one of the newest FE blocks they made, as far as I've been able to gather. These newer blocks have enhanced webbings cast in around the main bearings, making them a little stronger, so all other things being equal, they're better than older FE blocks. I've read that it's not a huge advantage though, but you may as well be happy about it if that's what you've got. :)

I don't believe any trucks with FE's were ever equipped with a 4 barrel from the factory, so if it's a factory Ford intake it was swapped from an earlier model car engine. I'm pretty sure 360's were available up until 1976 right along with the 390, so it could easily be a 360 with a 4 barrel intake swap. You'll have to do some more investigating!

Your site you posted specifically shows that some 390's came with 4bbl's. Also the date code on the intake is a D5T3 making it a truck intake from 1975 and not from an earlier car. T=truck.

Somehow I missed the part where you said the intake stamp was from 1975

You learn something new every day; I knew no bumps had 4v 390's but I didn't think any trucks had 4v's besides 460 equipped ones. Looks like 74-76 could have a 4v 390, so I'm sure that's what you've got.

dents could certainly have 360FE engines, the U-Haul F-350 trucks with the 14 foot boxes all had 360's. They ran them 'til about '76 at least.

The FE is worth $150 easy. If the C6 comes with it then its worth $150 even if its a core trany.
