pics of old trailers

Post by Zorm »

looking for any pictures of old 70's era flatbed trailers or car haulers. I plan, onec both projects are done, is to have the f250 haul the 66 mustang around. I am coming into a free two axel trailer and would like to make it look like one form the late 60's, early 70's

thanks guys

Well, mine is titled as home made from '74. I've added the center section from a scrapped bed, and the winch mount, had the whole thing sprayed with bedliner, and since changed the fenders to a removable setup.

It had cut down mobile home axles that were pretty much garbage that I swapped out with tractor supply units with electric brakes.

Until I had gotten my 6.4L, it never came unhooked from the '79 Dually.

What's the deal with the 5 lug dually?

Car trailers haven't changed at all since everybody started building them which would have tied into about the same period where welding wasn't just a commercial operation anymore. Post WWII.

You basically have two types of trailers- Car trailers and equipment trailers. Car trailers have the frame and suspension/springs on the outside of the trailer, just inside the wheels. This makes for an overall very weak design, but it's cheap to make and works well with vehicles because the tires of the vehicle are near the trailer's frame.

Equipment trailers have a central frame or "spine" running the length of the trailer. This design allows the trailer's deck to handle much heavier loads.

I know a trailer is a trailer but what I am looking for, and thanks for the pics so far, are any old pictures anyone has in that 60/70's era of cars on trailers. Kinda like any Bonniville (spelling) salt flats pics. I looked up a few but did not get anything. Also tried to look at the BaJa 1000 from those years but really did not see anything.
Although the trailer above would look the part, if my memory is good, without the enter section...humm?

Curious what makes you believe the design of trailers has changed at all in the past 70 years? Heavier trailers went from spring to air suspension, not much else has changed.

The structural steel shapes available today are the same stuff that was available immediately following WWII.

I have an old single post lift trailer that would look the part but it's heavy beast even after cutting out the 400# 'H' section that the pole bolted to.
