HELP!

Post by vonburger »

Yesterday I asked my mom if I could order some part using her credit card and I would just pay her in cash. She says no and we get into an argument. I come to find out she does not want me working on the truck. Her reasoning is, that I need to save for a used car, and that she would be willing to to help pay for it, and that I can work on the truck when I have a job. I told her that limiting me on something that I'm trying to independant on is cruel and that she does not take it seriously. She thinks the truck is just a hobby. This is my first truck. It is not a hobby this is a huge project which I am having hard enough time trying to work on the truck and get money together without her disapproving and limiting what I can do. Please help me make her understand how serious and commited I am to this truck. Thanks.

She's probably right. Sorry. She wants you to have a modern, safe, and reliable car so you can get to school, work, or whatever she feels should be your first priority. If you still need her credit card, I'm guessing you are young. Get the car and then work your ass off to raise the money for the truck. That will show her that you are willing to do the right thing and that you will work for what you want. Or, you can move out on your own and do whatever you want as long as you can pay the rent, feed yourself, etc. Don't want to sound like an old grouch, but I have a mother and a 20 y.o. stepson. I've seen both sides and I know which one is probably right.

Major project and no funds equals failure every time...

As you can see in my Baby Lincoln thread, I tried to make the rebuilt hot rod daily drivers and sooner or later they just need too much work to keep dealing with the inconvenience. Going back to work fabbing new stainless exhaust for the little blue car. :D

The biggest thing is don't sweat the resto on the truck until you have a solid foundation of time, space, and money to build it on.

I am willing to work for what I want because I go out and do lawn work and manual labor to get money. I do not see WHY she wants me to get a used car instead of restoring the truck. I suppose gas mileage, but that is the only good reason I can see. Are big old trucks not safe? I am planning to put a three point seat belt into mine. I know it varies from truck to truck but generally how reliable are these old fords? Also, is modern a necessity? I can see how you would get both sides of the story haha

Like I said in the last post I do have funds, i have made around $200 solely for the purpose of restoring the truck. I do yard work and manual labor for 10 bucks an hour. I walk around dirt roads collecting aluminum cans in my spare time. I am not going a complete resto on it i am just getting it up and running< then redoing the interior. After that when i get the money and the motivation i want to do rust repair an exterior components. Thank you for putting your two cents in Ranchero50 and FLATBEDFORD

Stick with mom's advice. $200 is nowhere close to what you need to restore an old truck. I have $9,000 in mine at this point with at least another $11,000 to go.

A tank of gas will eat almost half of what you have.

I turned 20 in march and I'm just now getting to spend my money on my projects. Its just a parent thing, But she is right you need a reliable car that you can get round with. It's not fun having to work on your dd while your friends are off having fun without you.

I am not doing a full resto. Just getting it up and running and an interior.

I think you should take mom's advice and let her help you with the purchase of a "way to travel" (NEVER TURN THAT HELP DOWN!!!!!) Patience is a virtue when wanting to fix up any old vehicle. I say put the old ford on the back burner for awhile , let your mom help put you in a safe ride for now and take that ride and use it to make funds to do your fixer upper. Sounds like you are proud of your old ford and want to see it done but slow your roll and think about the long haul on fixing up your pride and joy. Might as well face it, it is going to take a long time to get the truck where you want it even without a full restoration. Far as the funds for the small things you want to do,well, i want even go there. I will say funds are the biggest reason it takes so long to fix up our babies. I would have to go along with everyone that posted above.
PS: Sorry we did not tell you what you wanted to hear.

Once again just 1 tank of gas is going to eat almost half of what you have.

That isn't the point. I will not be driving it hardly at all until i am sixteen. Hopefully by then i will have a part time job and a bit of cash flow.

Well you obviously know way more than anyone here or your mother. You have proven that to me so go ahead & ignore your mom. It should carry you far in life.

Be nice now. :nono:
We have all been 15 or so and known everything.

Vonburger, you'll just have to trust us old timers on this one. You'll understand one day. Hold on to that truck and make it nice when you have the money and time to do it right.

Not just the "old timers" either. I just turned seventeen 2 weeks ago and although my F-100 is my daily driver, I live less than a mile from school, am in a small town, and it rarely sees any other place than the parking lot at work or my driveway. Im lucky if I get 8 mpg which is torture on a income of roughly 120$ a week (making about 8.50/hour) and working 10 miles away while trying to go do things outside of work and school. Not to mention any other work I want to do to the truck- paint/body, engine work, interior, tires, windshield, rims, rear end, etc.. I dream of having a little 4 banger 5-speed to tool around in. It's definitely not a bad idea to let your mom help you buy an efficient car to use rather than let your truck bleed your money dry by using it to try to give you means to get money for the truck itself. Its just not practical. Plus once you sell this economy car (presumably for a profit provided you take care of it) at least your portion of what you bought it for (and possibly your mom's too) can go back into your truck fund.

And eventually you will be in a position like mine where once it is time to start thinking about college. And a 43 year old truck as a college vehicle is out of the question and I cannot afford to have it stored, so it will have to sit and my parents home or somewhere else where I can assure you it won't get the love I would give it.

I was being nice :D You said exactly what I was thinking. Back when I knew everything. I am glad a younger member chimed in with his personal experience owning 1 of these trucks. There is a reason when you see "cool cars/trucks" there is usually an old man driving it.
