WAY off topic. 2001 Elantra engine interchange question.

Post by FreakysFords »

I'm haveing ZERO luck trying to nail down exactly what engine is in a North American 2001 Elantra. I do know it's a 2.0 (1975) DOHC, but I'm certain it's got SOME designation. What I'm trying to find out is what vehicles share the same engine so I can look for an engine Saturday at Birmingham (AL) Pull-a-part.

Google pulls up a million links and some good info, but I'm having zero luck nailing down what the engine is (it's not a 390FE, a B230F, or a 22RE. lol).

I'm guessing someone here knows something on the subject.

The story is such. My youngest is married and has a child. Not a home, a car or much of anything. My Bride is disabled and my income is finite and minute, but we REALLY want her to finish college. I found a 2001 Hyundai Elantra for $300 with a bad engine and "IF" pull-a-part has something decent, I can get an engine for under $200. This is really the only way we can find her anything cheap and cheap on fuel that's family friendly at present.

Many thanks,
Frank

Hi Frank.

Browse this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyundai_Beta_engine

I believe it is a "Beta" or "Beta II" engine.

Hope this helps.

All the 2.0 hyundai engines interchange. Well, you can put newer into older, but not older into newer. The 2004+ engines have something like Honda V-tec that makes a whopping 3 more HP. The newer engine will drop right into the older cars and run fine.

You will have to switch the intake and exhaust manifolds though since the older engines are speed density while the newer ones are MAF.

I have a good running 2002 engine in my scrap pile. Nobody will give $50 for it on craigslist.

Wish I were closer!

average, that's the info I was best able to ascertain. We talked at length and decided to keep looking for a couple more weeks. I passed the Elantra off to a friend who's always happy to help out.

The cars aren't terrible, they're actually great econo-box basic transportation. Parts are stupid cheap for them and they are easy to work on. My wife's '02 was bought with a bad engine. I bought an entire much newer wrecked car for $400 just for the engine and scrapped the remainder for $350 plus kept an extra set of good tires/wheels. It's an auto with 300K on the original tranny, still shifts great. Gets 33 MPG if you drive it with your foot to the floor and nearly 40 with the cruise on 60.
