I work for Cashman Equipment in Henderson Nv. There is a Minexpo in town. We are putting together 4 machines.
Cat 994H 1 of the worlds largest wheel loaders. V16
Cat 797F Cats largest haul truck. V20
Cat 795F and a 795 AC. (diesel electric) V16's
These will be assembled to be seen for 3 days then dissasembled.
The V20 is not actually the largest they also have a V24.
The size in the picture does no justice untill you are next to them.
These are massive. I have lost all sense of size when it comes to nuts and bolts now.
I used to work on cars and trucks. 7/8 nascar lugnuts look like 1/2 to me now. :yt:

Hard to believe Cat's still trying to make engines. They have more than their share of problems. Cat is very arrogant about all of it too.

I work in the CRC shop. Component Rebuild Center. I have seen many engines built and run on dynos, none of them ever any problem. They last there expected time before rebuild. I do not see it the way "averagef250" does. Just sayin

I work for a Peterbilt Dealer and we are also a Cat TEPS dealer. Although Cat is out of the truck engine business their support to the TEPS dealers has always been good. Yes we see some component failures but more often than not they are long out of warranty. Also Cat powered used trucks don't stay on the lot very long. Just my :2cents:

Dustin, I don't know how much you follow the locomotive/marine/stationary power diesel engine market, but Caterpillar has a subsidiary called Progress Rail that recently (2010) bought Electro-Motive Diesel. EMD actually used to be the Electro-Motive Division of General Motors which for years made diesel engines for tugboats, stationary power, and entire locomotives. EMD engines are some of the most successful large diesel engines in the world. So as arrogant as they might be, CAT is going to be a big part of the diesel market for years to come.

EMD's bread and butter are 2-cycle roots-blown or turbocharged engines. The 710-series engines are 710 cubic inches PER CYLINDER - the 20-710 is a V20 configuration that produces 5,000 HP. Their competition in this market is primarily with General Electric.

My impression that CAT wasnt making truck engines anymore obviously because emission control mandates have presented a real hurdle in getting emission compliant engines to be both reliable and clean. I know John Deere was dabbling in the CNG market but have since got out because their product was having to many issues. Whats suprising is that the cummins 8.3 is still being made.

EIther way bobbyford thanks for the pic. I know for one i'd like to be the the same building as that when it fire off just to feel the rumble.

I don't think they fit in normal garages... I'm having trouble wrapping my little mind around a 13'8" tall tire.

My experience was with Cat V12's in 1000KW gens. The engines and the Cat approved installs had major flaws. More recent experience is with Cat pulling out of the over the road market.

Ive always had good luck with caterpiller products. Never been around thier big engines and equipment but i have a 3406 in my dumptruck and it went 3 years without any breakdowns driveing 3-500 miles a day. I had a 316 backhoe and a 302.5 mini excavator and if i needed a part cat had it in stock or had it the next day for me. Had a Hitichi 120 excavator ( John Deere) and if i needed something for it i always had to wait a week for the part. Hard to make a liveing without equipment needed to make a liveing because of a break down. Caterpiller has always come through for me.
