Picked up a 1968 f250 camper special

Post by chepdog1 »

Picked up a 1968 f250 camper special, 390 2bbl, c6, (prior owner changed the mirror's though, said they were to big for his taste) its a very solid truck, made the 2+ hour drive back home no problems, smooth ride, new tires yokohama geolander 235/85-16 on stock new steelies. Not a single leak of anything and idles beautiful through the dual exhaust and glasspacks. Body is pretty straight but a few dings and dents . Inside of bed is perfect, the bottom is not rippled like ocean waves and the top bed railings are smooth. The grill is straight and true. Has some steering wheel play but hopefully its just worn tie rods /drag link etc. I sold my 72 highboy (really need a crew cab highboy :D ) but i saw this 68 and couldnt pass up. I was already considering painting it but i think im going to leave it original and admire its nostalgia. 8) I'll post pics. when get the chance.

I have a 68 CS. What do your mirrors look like? I have toyed with the idea of replacing my west coast ones with smaller ones. I have no intention of hauling a cab over. I the comfort of motels now a days.

I feel odd pulling the choke knob in the morning for it to start properly, never had a (choked) vehicle. Tomorrow im going to install a pertronix system and check the gap on the plugs, the prior owner said he replaced them (full tune up) in December but only drove the truck like 2500 miles since (used it for hauling hay for his few horses and random things around the house. Original owner lives in Stockton CA. whom traveled to San Jose to buy it back in 68 where truck was built. I bought it in Lodi to Fresno so im 3 rd owner, i guess its always good to know the history of these trucks whenever possible.

I know what you mean chepdog1 about the choke cable thing. It's new to me too and I'm trying to get used to it. I'm thinking an electronic choke conversion may be in the future for me. As for knowing the history on your truck, I think that is great and a part of enjoying your truck. I have the full history on my highboy and I also kept the contacts and all the paper work that I could get from the previous owner. I've done the same with other cars and vintage motorcycles in the past. Have fun with your truck!
