You mean the 150.00 "Exhaust Support Bracket, Catalytic Converter to Automatic Transmission" also known as "what keeps the headpipes from breaking off at the manifold"....
Mark my words, this is going to be the most expensive cheap car you ever owned...
You may have just changed my mind

Well I checked out another car today.. 89 Honda Civic 5 speed. It was rough and quite funny. Dented to heck, broken hood mount, hood pins, aftermarket muffler on the wrong side of the car (opposite side of the exhaust cut out in the bumper, bald tires, shifter knob threads didn't even match each other, home made switch panel in place of ignition, wires coming out of what was left of the steering collumn... The whole 9 yards. So I met the BMW once again confirmed the driveshaft isn't the problem and it is the exhaust. I also discovered that it used to be a family friend's car and he said it was a nice car. He had it serviced when he had it and they fixed a few oil leaks, tuned it up, and checked the rest of the car about a year ago. The PO is selling it because they went from having 3 kids to 5 due to legal issues with the family. He said he needed 800 for it so I offered him 700, and we met at 750. Going back to tomorrow to work out the title with my mom. Wish me and the car luck!

Along with my previous advice get your self a Bentley manual and Wayne's 101 projects book wouldn't be a bad idea either.
I posted links to pelican and they have a very good forum usually, I do spend most of my time on the 914 board though when I go over there though.
Don't put off the timing belt and do fix the exhaust bracket, IIRC it is all the support the downpipes and converter have, there may be one more bracket near the bellhousing.
BMW exhaust systems are generally pretty good, it is doubtful a stock engine is making more power without the rest of the exhaust and it might even be making less. It will still sound good with a quality muffler like a Eberspaecher (probably identical to BMW) it will just be a refined good. When looking be aware ANSA makes 2 lines OE replacement and Sport. The Both lines are SO/SO in their respective classes but they are serviceable if you just cant stand the $53.00 extra for a Eberspaecher, and don't think a 200-250.00 muffler is a Sport. Scorpion and Supersprint are the nice sport exhaust.
When I was much younger I had a Flowmaster on an E30 - not good trust me.
Really though, I can't emphasize enough that you need to try to wrap your head around things costing a little more and doing it right if you want a good experience with this car. Oil and an oil filter is about the limit of what you can expect from the box stores unless they are getting stuff from world pac and still be picky about brands.
Title issues.. I asked them if it had a clear title the first time I looked at it, but evidently it doesn't. It was still technically in the previous owner's name and after talking to him (family friend) he said that they still owed him 325$ on the car and they had been riding on his tags till they expired. And the only way for it to all work out was for him to apply for a lost title but he didn't wan to have to pay for taxes and tags, he preferred them to make the car right but I guess they want to attempt to sell it to someone else when it isn't in their name haha oh well
Back to cruising craigslist everyday in my 4th block class.. This time for a 5 speed something or another

He hasn't paid his obligation to the PO, so he is dishonest and probably lying through his teeth about the car. You are much better off without it. My experience, look for a good used Ford Ranger, best vehicle I have ever owned!
Went out today with mom to check out a Boss 302 for her (yes she wants to get a 2013 Boss 302) and I saw another old BMW so I stopped to look at it. It was a red 1985 BMW 635CSi. Paper on the dash says 2200 obo. Interior was in great shape but it's automatic. I didn't get to pop the hood and it slipped my mind to check the mileage. No leaks under the car but the paint was fading. I'm trying to get in touch with the guy now to arrange a time to test drive it.
I got in touch with him and he said he'd take 1800 for it.. It has a salvage title though. It had been hit in the front fender evidently. I'm going back tomorrow to take a closer look.

Well I'm pretty convinced I'm buying this car tomorrow. After driving and riding in it it's a really tight car with only some minor things wrong like a blinker light on the dash not working, slight exhaust leak, stuck odometer, and a leaking washer fluid reservoir. Overall I think the car is worth the money. It handled great, fired right up, is in decent shape on the exterior, has a great interior (by my standards for a 27 year old car),working windows and sunroof, comes with a different front valence, original BMW rims and hubcaps, the actual BBS rims that are on it, a sony stereo/cd/mp3 player, receipts for a fuel pump replacement and 900$ worth of other stuff, a dyno sheet (idk why you would dyno it), repair manuals, original tool kit, etc.. It should be in my driveway tomorrow (: wish me luck with it

Well she's mine now! It handles very nicely. Has a bit of road noise and the steering seems really tight but It rides excellently over bumps and such. I can tell it really likes the curves in the road! I got about 19.7 mpg on the way home which is out of this world for me. My apologies for the bad lighting but here are some more pics:

She looks nice. From the day I started planning my bump project, a DD (beater) was a must. My first one was a '90 Toyo Camry with 173K miles for $1300. It lasted 18 mos and died 2 mos ago. Two weekends ago, I bought my current DD, a '90 Honda Accord EX (5 spd) with 206K miles for $1275. Paints rough but everything works including the A/C. My wife has a 2012 Kia Sorento we bought new last October. We carpool to work 120 mile round trip/day. The Kia only gets 19-20 mpg. The Honda should get around 24-30. When the Toyo died we had to drive my wife's car and spent $120-$150/week on gas and put thousands of excess miles on it. If this Honda lasts 4 mos it will have paid for itself and if it lasts a year we'll save over $4000 on gas alone. When the Honda dies (I view my "beaters" as disposable cars) I'll buy another $1000-$1500 and drive another year. Need the real money for my bump!
